When “Hainan Village” is mentioned, not many people know that it’s a meatless and halal kopitiam/restaurant. However, unlike most Chinese-style vegetarian eateries, Hainan Village’s offering does not just present the usual run-of-the-mill Chinese “dai chow” kind of dishes. Flipping through their menu, we see selections of appetizers, “small eats” (snacks), western items like pasta and burgers and other unique renditions – all of which are plant-based. Some of our favourites here … [Read more...]

GARDENAGE CAFE, Kota Kemuning
When we moved to Kota Kemuning 15 years ago, the main thing that enticed me to this township was the rich and extensive greenery of this place. Tall matured trees and shrubs were everywhere, providing shade and beauty to the environment. Well, most of this green landscape still abounds and for that, I believe many residents are happy. And I believe there are many here who are also lovers of Mother Nature and into gardening – especially the folks who run … [Read more...]

An avid and passionate cook, Shirley explains that her mother used to operate a stall in Penang selling her famous duck meat koay teow th’ng. She recalls how her mother used to patiently fan the charcoal stove to boil the stock used for the noodles. It took hours and hours of boiling to achieve the right depth of flavours in the soup. … [Read more...]
Haechi Korean Restaurant, Kota Kemuning – BBQ and More!
There are several Korean restaurants in Kota Kemuning but so far, our favourite is Haechi. As the name suggests, this Korean restaurant serves BBQ and we have been going there many times for our favourite BBQs. Haechi may not be very visible from the road as it is tucked away on the 1st floor of the shoplot they occupy. It is owned by a very pleasant and friendly Korean couple, known simply as Mr & Mrs Lee who have made Malaysia their home some years ago. The restaurant is bright … [Read more...]
Good old favourites at Kampar Old Town Kopitiam, Kota Kemuning
Food outlets open and close so often nowadays in Kota Kemuning that it’s not surprising the residents can’t really keep up with the dynamics. This kopitiam is run by the family of Leong Kok Ying who is the founder of the famous Restaurant Wing Lok Yuen in Kampar. Located along Kampar town’s main street – Jalan Idris, that restaurant was founded in 1947. Wing Lok Yuen is the original … [Read more...]
