Hock Kee Kopitiam is not like your regular kopitiam in a row of shoplots. Instead, it’s a cosy space inside Nexus in Bangsar South serving all the usual kopitiam favourites, some of which are given their own unique Hock Kee twists. Given how the kopitiam trend is a hit with Malaysians, it isn’t surprising to find that Hock Kee was really busy – the place was pretty packed with customers enjoying a leisurely brunch on a weekend!
We were quickly ushered in by their smiling helpful crew and politely given some of their shop recommendations. It’s easy to pick out these as we saw other patrons having them as well!
We started off with some bread items – their Sambal Egg Cucumber Toast and Charcoal Polo Bun with Coffee Butter. The spicy sambal in the toast became a firm favourite with us and the polo bun with fragrant coffee butter made a refreshing difference from the usual kaya & butter!
The Nasi Lemak Banjir was served with a bowl of curry gravy separately and we poured this over the rice. Lots of tasty accompaniments – chicken, acar, ikan bilis, peanuts, sambal and their signature sotong sambal. It’s a plate of satisfaction, with so much to tease the palate!
We were told that their Chicken Rice and Laksa are classics which must be tried and we’re glad we did. Although looking a bit plain and basic, the Chicken Rice turned out to be pretty delicious – rice was fragrant, chicken was nicely steamed and not overdone and the chilli and ginger dips worked well.
The curry broth for the Laksa was rich and fragrant with the spices used – we liked that it was not overwhelming and the simple toppings of shredded chicken, tofu puffs, fuchuk and long beans gave it a comforting nostalgic touch.
The Satay Fried Kway Teow looked interesting on the menu and we just had to see what it’s like. We felt the fried kway teow was actually good on its own and the satay sauce was unnecessary and kinda out of place.
Generally we think the prices were decent, given the location. Hock Kee Kopitiam is a cosy comfortable place for all your regular Malaysian kopitiam food and the crew is friendly and enthusiastic.
