The Royal Selangor Yacht Club (RSYC) is no stranger to me. My in-laws were the first food operator of this grand dame, way back many years ago. At that time and until a few years ago, the RSYC was strictly for members only. It’s the oldest and largest yacht club in Malaysia, having been established in 1963. The club is graced by the royal patronage of HRH Sultan of Selangor. Some of you may be familiar with the prestigious Raja Muda Selangor International Regatta, which is organised by … [Read more...]
Start your SEGAMAT FOOD TRAIL at VIP HOTEL!
Ipoh, Penang and Melaka are popular destinations for short breaks away from the city. The problem is these cities are so popular that on most weekends and public holidays, they will be crowded with holiday-makers thronging the well-known spots. If you are tired of the above scenario, why not head down south to Segamat for that little break? Located just over 200km from Kuala Lumpur, a leisurely drive of about 3 hours would bring you to this little town. We used to have a neighbour who was … [Read more...]
LAI CHING YUEN @ Grand Millennium Kuala Lumpur unveils NEW MENU!
It has been quite some time since I last set foot in Lai Ching Yuen, the elegant Chinese restaurant in Grand Millennium Kuala Lumpur. In a recent visit, I was again struck by its stunning red and black decor with touches of gold elements enhancing the grand oriental theme of the restaurant. I like the thoughtful layout of tables took into consideration group dining with the typical big round tables as well as smaller tables set for an intimate meal for couples. Best … [Read more...]
Grab a table at TABLE 23, Jalan Mesui, Kuala Lumpur
Table 23 is located in the middle of a quieter road away from the mad chaos of Changkat Bukit Bintang. The eateries along this road, Jalan Mesui, seem more comfortable and definitely more inviting than those on the main touristy belt. We were at Table 23 for dinner and while waiting for our food, we took time to take in the cosy charm of the place. Personal gifts and deco items of the owner are displayed in a cabinet, some of which are conversational pieces. got the feeling … [Read more...]
Peruvian Roast Chicken at BRASARIA, Jaya One, Petaling Jaya
Since the last Peruvian chicken restaurant in my hood closed down, I thought I won’t see one again around for some time. But guess what? There’s a restaurant tucked away in Jaya One which serves only Peruvian-style roast chicken which recently came into my radar. Brasaria is a bright cheerful eatery done up in the most vibrant colours you can imagine. It’s a riot - think purple walls, orange partitions, yellow tables and lime green floor! And look out for that bright grinning patchwork … [Read more...]
BEIJING’S FINE CANTONESE CUISINE by CHEF VINCENT ZHANG @ Hilton Petaling Jaya
When I visited Beijing a few years back, I tasted a wide range of different cuisines in that great city. In Beijing, one can have food from all the different provinces in China and each region’s cuisine is unique in its own way. Sichuan, Henan, Shanxi, Fujian, Shandong - and of course Guangdong - these are just some of the bigger provinces in China. Among all, Cantonese cuisine (from Guangdong) was my favourite so when I heard that a Beijing chef would be in Hilton Petaling Jaya to cook up some … [Read more...]
PORK-FREE DINING @ DYNASTY RESTAURANT, Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel
The Dynasty Restaurant in Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel has recently been converted into a Pork-free eatery. While some chefs may find this a challenge, ie cooking Chinese food without pork may somewhat affect the flavours of the dishes, Executive Sous Chef Kok Chee Kin has crafted a repertoire which proved to be just as good. I had a sampling of some of the new dishes and came away happy and impressed that they were all good! I didn’t think the food was any less superior as the tastes and … [Read more...]
KRISTANG CUISINE – MELBA AT THE MANSION, The Majestic Malcca
In our recent 2nd visit to the lovely YTL resort, The Majestic Malacca, I was delighted to note that the hotel’s main restaurant, The Mansion has now adopted a new concept. It used to serve a mix of western and Peranakan favourites but now has been re-branded as “Melba at The Mansion” serving Malaccan-Portuguese cuisine known as “Kristang” cuisine. It’s helmed by Chef Melba Nunis who’s proud of her Kristang lineage. Born and bred in Malacca, Chef Melba has been exposed to Kristang cuisine since … [Read more...]

DZH SEAFOOD SAUNABOAT @ TREC Kuala Lumpur
There’s steamboat and there’s hotpot but have you heard about saunaboat? Basically, saunaboat it’s about steaming food, in the true sense of the word. The regular “steamboat” is such a misnomer – food is cooked in boiling soup and not steamed! Whereas, saunaboat is much like in a sauna - placing food in a closed space and cooking it in high-heat steam. DZH Seafood Saunaboat in the entertainment mecca of TREC started off in Johor about a year ago. Apparently it’s so popular that they … [Read more...]
