With 8 outlets in the Klang Valley, Penang and Johor, Brussels Beer Cafe is familiar to many. This is where many beer lovers head to for chilling out with their beer fix, particularly Belgian beers.
Don’t be surprised if Hoegaarden beer is offered enthusiastically to you as Brussels Beer Café is the first outlet to serve this Belgian beer fresh off the tap, besides the other 2 Belgians: Leffe and Stella Artois beers. My favourite is the pinkish Hoegaarden Rosee with a delightful fruity aroma and subtle hints of spices and coriander and of course, it is sweeter than regular beers.
My favourite Hoegaarden Rosee (RM16 half pint, RM28 full pint)
In fact, there’s a whole wide range of Belgian draught beers there, like Belle-Vue Kriek, Duvel and even the Grimbergen. From the mild fruity types to the stronger, sharper and full bodied versions, beer lovers will be absolutely delighted here. As far as bottled beers are concerned, the variety is even more mind-boggling.
Clockwise from top left: Belle-Vue Kriek (RM18 half pint/RM30 full pint), Leffe Brune (RM18 half pint/RM30 full pint), Chimay Peres Trappist (RM29.80/bottle) and Duvel (RM29.80/bottle)
The people at Brussels Beer Café love their beers and spirits so much that many of their dishes also have beer in the recipes. The Blind Finches (RM13.80) is a good example – it is a starter of minced pork wrapped with streaky bacon and braised in Leffe Blonde onion sauce. The smoky and fragrant flavors of this appetizer are enough to make you mop up all the sauce with the accompanying piece of rye bread!
As you down the hearty beers, lighter starters will go a long way. Belgian croquettes (RM13.80) are a good choice and for something which is equally light yet filling, go for the Belgian Classic Liege Salad (RM16.80). The warm pieces of grilled chicken breast, boiled potatoes and French beans are bound to fill you up… especially if you are a small eater!
A “fun” dish to eat is the Moules Hoegaarden (RM48.80) – it’s a hearty pot of air-flown love mussels cooked in the most divine way with Hoegaarden beer and lightly paired with coriander, celery and lemon zest. A bowl of thick-cut fries is served together which you can dip into some garlic aioli and flavorsome mayonnaise.
The Brussels-style Pork Knuckle at RM70.80 is a full portion good for sharing. The whole roasted knuckle is served off-bone which makes eating so much easier. The crispy golden skin is bound to be fought over, simply because it’s so good. Saute’ed potatoes and mushrooms are served by the side, together with a tureen of brown sauce, which I found slightly lacking in flavor. The pork knuckle is mildly marinated with cajun, mustard, salt and pepper so it would do better with a more robust sauce.
For a taste of stoemp – a Belgian potato mash, check out the Brussels Chicken (RM26.80) or the NUrnberger Ring Sausage (RM33.80) as both these are served with it.
Don’t miss out their Waffles (RM12.80) – it’s pure comfort food. The freshly-made warm waffles are served with thick chocolate sauce, meringue and ice cream.

Brussels Beer Café currently has 8 outlets in the Klang Valley, Penang and Johor.
For the whole of this month, it’s best to visit the outlet in Sunway Pyramid as Brussels Beer Café is participating in the month-long “World of Cravings” promotion in the mall. It’s best that you download their Sunway Pyramid Mobile App to have a better idea on all their exclusive gastronomic promotions. It would be really worth your while to do that as there are contests and redemptions that you can participate in. In particular, HSBC cardholders will be one lucky bunch of people because they do get some really cool deals and priority consideration in the food promotions.
