Every St Regis hotel in the world emanates a special signature scent which guests get to experience the moment they step into the main lobby. Known as “Caroline’s Four Hundred”, the scent was inspired by the 400 elite guests who attended one of Caroline Astor’s finest balls in New York way back in 1900. Caroline was the matriarch of the famous Astor family that owned and started The St Regis hotels, beginning with The St Regis New York which was opened in 1904 during the Gilded Age.
The charming sophisticated foyer
A ceiling of gold
So, we sniffed delicately Caroline’s Four Hundred as we stood admiring the beautiful and elegant decor of The St Regis Macao, the newest luxury hotel on Macao’s Cotai Central. This 400-suite property is also the biggest St Regis in the world. We were mesmerised by the constellation of golden light bulbs which formed a unique wave above the signature grand staircase – a sight that’s bound to impress even the most jaded eyes. The understated elegance of the reception and lobby area prescribed fully to The St Regis’ standard luxury and style.
The renowned personalised service of The St Regis started when our own butler escorted us straight to our St Regis Suite. The butler service includes unpacking our suitcase but we politely declined (geee, I’m so not used to that!) and we only asked for some iced coffee to go with the welcome snacks in our suite. Ahh…on hindsight, we should have savoured that rare luxury more, the butler service, I mean. After all, that is the essence of a St Regis stay. I shall remember that in our next St Regis experience.
Welcome to our St Regis Suite!
Fresh fruits, madeleines and chocolates to welcome us
The personalised service extends beyond the butler. Everywhere we went in the hotel, the staff greeted us warmly by our names. Gosh, how did they know our names when they didn’t even see us check-in and they remember our suite number (without having to refer to a computer screen or a form)? The concierge was very helpful in getting us a cab when we wanted to go to Senado Square. For some reason there was no cab coming in to the hotel’s main entrance so he walked with us to the main road to hail one and he made sure the cab-driver knew our destination.
Furniture and decor were premium and top-notch
Of course our suite was gorgeous. Style, colours and forms match and blend beautifully. From the super-comfortable king bed to the all-marble bathroom, nothing is spared to provide the utmost comfort and relaxation. I loved the soothing creams and whites of the decor with touches of lilac and blue for a refreshing feel.

We had a peep at the other suites as well… each one more impressive and sumptuously appointed than the preceding one!

And here’s the Presidential Suite…
The epitome of luxury and comfort
Yes, a private dinner party is certainly possible here!
The fitness centre is not merely a gym – it’s the St Regis Athletic Club. Fully equipped with Technogym machines, guests can be assured of a total workout here. On top of the machines, there are aerobics, pilates and yoga classes conducted and personal trainers are on hand to attend to any fitness regime needed.
While we were in Macao, the weather was extremely foggy and rainy so we didn’t get into the pool. There were some really magnificent private cabanas by the pool besides the regular sun beds which looked really inviting!
At The St Regis, the Iridium Spa is a haven for some ultra pampering sessions. I wished we had more time to check out those very appealing spa facilities and therapies.
Relax and choose your favourite oils
Dining options are at The Manor and The St Regis Bar. We had a lovely dinner and breakfast at the former and a classy Afternoon Tea at the latter. More about this in an upcoming post, so please stay tuned 🙂
