Yes, the World Cup fever is simmering now and Brazil is propelled to the world stage – it’s no surprise then that anything Brazilian is the rage now. So, is that a good enough excuse to go for some Brazilian BBQ? Maybe yes, maybe no… but if you are anywhere in the Petaling Jaya area, that is a pretty good reason to head to Carnaval Churrascaria. More so if you are a vociferous meat eater!
Housed in a corner shoplot, you can’t miss the bright yellow, green and blue interior décor of the restaurant. The starters and side dishes are all laid out on a buffet counter. Choices are aplenty: western salads, pastas and sides are placed next to local favourites like squid sambal, stir-fried greens, noodles and I particularly like the blanched ladies fingers served with a fiery tangy sambal belacan. Equally good are the slices of deep-fried battered brinjals paired with a Thai-style chilli sauce.
Everything looks so appetizing on the buffet counter and it’s hard not to pile up your plate. However, do exercise some will power to go easy on this as the barbequed meats should be the focus!
Once we are seated, the servers come round with the stars of the meal – juicy lamb shoulder, rump steaks, lamb chops and chicken ham, all on skewers. Diners are each given a pair of tongs to grip the meats as they are sliced at the table to prevent them from falling off. With pink and juicy centres, the meats are perfectly grilled. However, if you prefer your meats rarer or more cooked, you can request for that and they’ll come round later with your preferences.
Care for some lamb cutlets?
Besides the Australian beef and NZ lamb, there are chicken wings, gizzards, squids and dory. Chicken hearts are served upon request. For the record, their garlic bread toasted on the grill is superb but then I was restraining myself from taking more than a piece of it.

Lamb shoulder – the crowd pleaser! Lamb lovers would adore this.
I like how the service crew is so observant that they make sure once your plate is empty, they will be at your table immediately with the next slab of meat on a skewer! With their super sharp carving knives, the hot freshly grilled meats are sliced effortlessly. The meats are seasoned lightly so as not to mar their natural flavours and no MSG or tenderizer is used. Sauces are quite limited – there’s a minty lime garlic vinegar dip meant for the lamb and even this is quite mild. Brazilian BBQ is all about enjoying the meats as naturally as possible, without too much other “distractions”!
The best grilled pineapple ever!
The chicken ham may look pale and uninspiring but it’s seriously a damn good ham!
Everyone’s favourite must be the grilled pineapples. They disappear very quickly the moment they are brought out but then they are replenished all the time, so no worries. Their wonderful sweet aromas hit our nostrils as the service staff slices the sweet golden hued caramelized fruit onto our tongs. The fruity aroma is quite heady and hit our olfactories in the most beguiling way. Even LL who has never liked pineapples cannot stop eating these sweet addictive slices here! Be sure to ask for the chicken ham – it’s really very good and pairs excellently with the grilled pineapples.
Caipirihna – packs a pretty good punch!
Drinks and desserts are not included in the buffet price. The dessert selection isn’t all that great (probably because most people would be too stuffed with no room for dessert!). The Caramelized Banana with Vanilla Ice Cream (RM11.50++) is commendable. Oh you may want to try their signature drink – Caipirihna (RM18.50++) which is premium Brazilian rum served with crushed ice, sugar and lime wedges.
Price: RM71++ per adult, RM23++ for children under 12 and if you are just going for the salad & appetizers bar, it’s RM33++.
