In our last trip to Phuket, we chose to stay in the Old Town area. Usually we would have stayed in the popular Patong Beach area but this time we decided to stay in Phuket Town itself for a change and also because there are better dining options there.
One of the most popular restaurants in the Old Town is One Chun. It is almost an institution there and it’s always busy! Located in a 19th century building, this vintage restaurant is appealing with its charming old Chinese wooden furniture and Peranakan-like floor tiles. Green ceiling beams and door frames against white walls add on that old-world ambience. Checking out the array of old paraphernalia like tv sets, projectors, clocks, hot water flasks and radios, we felt like we were transported back to the 1960’s.
The menu features some classic Thai dishes and some with Peranakan influences as well. Their signature Crabmeat Curry with Rice Vermicelli and Phuket-style Pork Belly with Pepper & Garlic are must-have dishes here. Cooked in creamy coconut milk and Thai herbs, the chunky Crabmeat Curry was exquisite when eaten with the vermicelli.
The super-tender Phuket-style Pork Belly was amazing – so aromatic and so good eaten with white rice. Flavours were addictively bold and totally seeped into the luscious meat.
In fact, we enjoyed everything we ordered here – 2 types of Fried rice, Phad Thai and Deep-fried Cuttlefish… everything executed so well. Definitely a must-return place whenever we are in Phuket.
