Fancy some fluffy fragrant steamed rice with spices-clad fried chicken?
The MamaYu kiosk in Midvalley Megamall serves “Nasi Kukus” (steamed rice) and Ayam Goreng Berempah (spicy fried chicken) as its main items. Owned by a couple of young entrepreneurs, the recipes for both these specialities come from one of their Kelantanese relatives. What’s more interesting is that authentic Gulai Kawah and Gulai Kerutuk, both Kelantanese in origin, are served with the rice.
Besides the regular Nasi Kukus, nasi lemak is also available. A plate of Nasi Kukus with a whole chicken leg, with sides of mixed vegetables and prawn crackers and doused with the gulais costs only RM8.90. The huge chicken portion, marinated with aromatic herbs and spices like shallots, lemongrass, turmeric, chillies, ginger and garlic is fried to a perfect golden crisp on the skin while the meat underneath remains tender and juicy.
I like the gulai kawah and gulai kerutuk which lend a very Kelantanese slant to the rice and chicken dish. The gulai kerutuk is slightly sweetish, thanks to the addition of gula Melaka and it’s pretty addictive. I asked for more of this to drench over my Nasi Kukus. There’s also a kickass sambal belacan available if you love more heat on the tongue!
Nasi Lemak with fried chicken and complete condiments of ikan bilis, cucumber slices, boiled eggs, peanuts, prawn crackers and sambal is also priced at RM8.90 – what a steal! The coconut milk-infused fluffy rice is very fragrant and I like it that the rice isn’t soft and soggy.
The menu here is simple and limited to just the Nasi Kukus and Nasi Lemak to maintain focus. In the morning, there’s one other item available: Rice Noodle Rolls with Shrimp Stuffing at RM2.50 per roll.
