It’s no secret that I love steamboat or hot pot as some may call it. There’s something truly enjoyable about eating freshly cooked food, like right out of the pot! Nothing can be fresher than eating that piece of meat, fish or vegetables that have just been dunked into hot soup and cooked to just the perfect done-ness. Besides, it’s also healthier as not much oil is involved unless you choose to dunk in fatty meats.
I always go for clear soup in my steamboat. That’s the best medium to cook fresh food and does not alter the natural flavours of the ingredients too much. At Ding Emperor, clear Chinese cabbage soup as well as hot spicy soup are available. Opened since last November, Ding Emperor, with its typical grande Chinese decor of domed archways and ornate furniture, has been dishing out its delicious house-made steamboat ingredients.
At Ding Emperor, you won’t find any of those commercially-produced fish balls, fish paste or meat balls that are generically offered in most steamboat joints. Besides the freshest meats and seafood, their meat and seafood paste are all made from scratch in-house. For a touch of luxury, try their specials like Scallop & Fish Paste and Abalone & Fish Paste.
Their handmade chicken, squid, shrimp and fish balls are delicious and bouncy in texture. It’s important not to over-boil them to enjoy the natural sweetness of their flavours. I particularly loved their handmade beef balls.
For meat lovers, don’t miss out the platters of freshly-sliced premium Meltique beef from Australia, fresh boneless chicken and pork neck slices.
If you must have noodles to go with the soup, Ding Emperor offers some good stuff in their handmade udon, ramen and celery noodles.
Sauces and dips are at diners’ disposal on a counter where “concoct your own” is the order of the day. Make your dips as fiery or as mild as you like.
Prices of each serving starts from RM4.90.
Although the prices at Ding Emperor may seem steeper than the regular steamboat joints, the premium quality and cosy ambience of the place are fair justifications. It’s been marked in my list as a very decent place for steamboat and I’ll certainly be returning!
