This year the Bakchang Festival falls on 6 June. Usually a few weeks before the festival, the Chinese will be making and enjoying the bamboo leaves-wrapped dumplings. My favourite has always been the Cantonese-style "ham yook chung" which I make almost every year (see my post on that here). A couple of weeks back I had the chance of trying Debbie Teoh's Nyonya Chung and after that, I was so inspired to give this a try. So, I sent out an SOS for some "bunga telang" and my kind kahcheh went and … [Read more...]
Comforting Claypot Chicken Rice @ LSY Pot, Puchong
There's something very comforting and heart-warming about food served in claypots. Yes, "warm" is the operative word here. In fact, that's the whole idea of cooking food in claypots because heat is retained in the pots for a longer time thus sealing in the flavours of the food. Claypots are often soaked in water before being used and the water is retained in the porous clay, so when the pot is heated up during the cooking process, steam is released and helps in the "steaming" of the food and the … [Read more...]
Xara’s Food Trail
I have known Xara since we were in primary school. Yes, way back in Ipoh. When we entered secondary school, both of us cycled to school... and that was the beginning of many after-school "extra-curricular" activities. We'd cycle to town to watch our favourite chinese kungfu movies, parking our bicyles for 10sen per movie in those makeshift sheds beside the cinemas (Lido, Cathay, Rex & Majestic were our usual haunts). We'd pay 65sen for the lowest class seats and we'd litter the floors with … [Read more...]
Set Buffet @ Kampachi, Equatorial Kuala Lumpur
I think if you mention "Kampachi", most people would know that it's one of the pioneer and premier Japanese restaurants in the city. The restaurant, located in the Equatorial Kuala Lumpur is a favourite with many and their Sunday Buffet Brunch is extremely popular - almost legendary, where advance bookings are a must. I like how they offer a "lesser salt" version of shoyu, but I can't remember whether it was the red or blue bottle! Besides the Sunday Buffet Brunch, Kampachi also serves … [Read more...]
A Touch of Nyonya – Chef Debbie Teoh @ Chatz Brasserie, Parkroyal Kuala Lumpur
Mention "Nyonya Cuisine" and no one is more qualified than Chef Debbie Teoh to be associated with it. She has authored several cook books - "Underwraps", "Asian Tidbits", "Nyonya Flavours", "Authentic Nyonya Tastes" as well as being a well-respected foodie, food stylist and ambassador for the Nyonya cuisine and culture. Chef Debbie Teoh will be cooking up a nyonya storm at Chatz Brasserie @ … [Read more...]
Steamboat, HK-style @ Elegant Inn
Steamboat, to many, may be a tedious kind of meal. The main grouse would probably be that you have to cook the meal yourself, at the dining table. And you may have to put up with some hot waves of air from the boiling pot of broth and the cooker too... on top of having to cook your food! Some people avoid steamboat because well, the food gets kinda monotonous here because most of the stuff we have are made from fishpaste - a variety of shapes and sizes, but basically, fishpaste is the core … [Read more...]
A Taste of Australian Avocados
Truth be told - I never knew how wonderful the avocado really is. That is, not until I had an educational afternoon recently when Euro-Atlantic together with Agri-Science Queensland (Department of Employment, Economic Development & Innovation) in partnership with The Avocado Export Company organized a session to introduce this nutritious fruit. The event was held at the Berjaya University College of Hospitality. The avocado is one of the most nutrient-rich energy-dense fruit … [Read more...]
Songkran Feast @ Erawan Classic Thai & Fusion
The Thais celebrate Songkran as their traditional New Year's Day. While the date of Songkran used to be set by astrological calculation, it is now celebrated from 13-15 April. The festival is usually associated with the throwing of water on people (at least that's how I always associate it!) - this originated from the pouring of "blessed" water, ie water that has been used to cleanse Buddhas. It is a mark of respect and good fortune as this "blessed" water is poured over the shoulders. … [Read more...]
Noodles Party @ Chef Choi’s
Let me tell you something: I love my noodles, I do. I'd go for noodles, any time, over rice. So, when CS decided to hold a Noodles Party at Chef Choi's and I was privileged enough to be on her invitation list, I was almost ecstatic. If my previous dinner experience at Chef Choi's was anything to go by, I just couldn't wait to see what kinda partying we'd be having on Noodles Nite! The party kicked off with the most lusted-over appetizer... what else could it be but.... … [Read more...]
Sim Hap Ke – an unforgettable meal
When I read WMW's blogpost on this place recently, I knew I just had to go and check this out a.s.a.p. There have been numerous posts by other food bloggers on Sim Hap Ke, and I had actually earmarked this place on my "Must Eat" list, since last year! So, last weekend,we finally made our way there. I called ahead to book and made sure we were there early. When we sat down, I confidently gave our orders, based on what WMW has recommended. Now, this was when this amusing exchange … [Read more...]
