For this entire month of October, some 28 of Malaysia's top restaurants are offering specially created Festival Menus at very special festival prices, in line with the Malaysia International Gourmet Festival - MIGF. The media launch of this event was held earlier last month where the theme was announced - "It's Raining Chefs". This year's deliberately light-hearted tagline is aimed at giving the festival universal appeal. "Malaysia is a relaxed and friendly food destination," says Dato' Steve … [Read more...]
Bijan – fine Malay cuisine in the heart of Kuala Lumpur
Bijan - a name synonymous with refined Malay dining in Kuala Lumpur, has been established since 2003. They can be considered as the pioneer in this cuisine segment. Not to be mistaken for "fine dining", at Bijan, their service philosophy lies in marrying traditional recipes with modern ingredients to create a total dining experience for the modern Malaysian. Newly renovated and expanded, Bijan now boasts a more spacious dining area, a whole new bar and reception area. A warm rustic theme runs … [Read more...]
Dining at The Chef’s Table @ The Chalet, Equatorial Kuala Lumpur
Dining at The Chef's Table is a whole new experience for me. Traditionally, the Chef's Table is reserved for a special group of diners where they get to taste special dishes concocted by the chef. And usually this table is located near the kitchen, for closer attention by the chef. Apparently this is very popular in the UK, with many fine restaurants in London offering this concept - the noteworthy ones are those run by the likes of Gordon Ramsay (Maze, Claridges) and Marcus Wareing. Recently, … [Read more...]

My Pineapple Tarts
What do you do when your BFF asks you to bake and send over some pineapple tarts...way over to the USA? Well, what I did was ... went to buy 5 huge pineapples from the market, peeled and chopped them and cooked them into a thick sticky jam. When my BFF, Xara asked me "how do you cook pineapple jam"... that was exactly what I told her and she exclaimed "Really, that's all??". Yep...it's as easy as that. Just add some sugar to balance out the tartness and sourness and cook it over a slow fire. Of … [Read more...]
Al-Amar Express @ Fahrenheit 88, Kuala Lumpur
I've never really tried Lebanese food here in Kuala Lumpur so when the invitation came, via FatBoyBakes, to check out Al-Amar Express, I took the opportunity to do so. While I had eaten Middle Eastern food in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, I was curious to see how Lebanese cuisine fares here. Poised on a very strategic spot on the famed Bukit Bintang sidewalk at the Fahrenheit 88 shopping mall, Al-Amar Express attracts loads of customers - be they curious locals, tourists or real afficionados of … [Read more...]
Heun Kee in Pudu – Awesome Claypot Chicken Rice!
Recently, after some tiring trooping up and down at a shopping mall, we were stumped at what to eat for a late lunch, or was that tea?... it was close to 4pm then. For breakfast, we already had our fill of hawker fares at the foodcourt earlier... and we weren't too impressed with the ramen we ate after the movie. We didn't fancy eating at any more of the food outlets/restaurants at the mall. Then a lightbulb flashed in my mind ... and I suggested to DL that we should go check out this Claypot … [Read more...]
Best Steamed Haruan Fish @ Yap Yin Seri Kembangan
The Haruan fish is a member of the snakeheads family. The bigger, more popular specie is the Toman and Haruan is the smaller version. Now, the name itself - snakehead - already is self-descriptive. The haruan fish ("sang yue" in cantonese) is believed to have wound-healing properties and it's a common "prescription" among Chinese, especially for women who have just given birth or anyone who's had surgery. It's been documented that the meat of this fish contains high levels of essential amino … [Read more...]
Home-cooked Bak Kut Teh, Klang-style
Bak Kut Teh - literally translates to "meat bone tea" (in Hokkien) is a perennial favourite with my family. History has it that Bak Kut Teh was introduced to Malaya back in the 19th century by Chinese workers from the Fuchien (Hokkien) province. Back then, most of these immigrants worked mainly in the docks and Bak Kut Teh was usually their main meal. So it isn't surprising to note that Klang and Port Klang are where the Bak Kut Teh action is! Bak Kut Teh is essentially meat (usually pork) … [Read more...]
Kelantan Delights @ Subang Jaya – the best Buka Puasa Buffet I’ve had!
Let's get straight to the point. Hari Raya Aidilfitri is less than a week away, I know... and if you have not been to any Buka Puasa yet or if there is ONE Buka Puasa that you must go to, then it's at Kelantan Delights in Subang Jaya! Kelantan Delights started off in the food court of KLCC some 14 years ago and I remember they're really popular - there's always a long queue of people. Business was very brisk and this led them to their first full-fledged restaurant in Suria KLCC and later … [Read more...]
