The coffee culture has really taken the Klang Valley by storm and everywhere coffee cafes are sprouting like mushrooms after rain. Why, even in the industrial area of Bandar Sunway, there’s Garage 51 and Coffee Société holding fort and coffee lovers suddenly have a good reason to head that way.
Well, now apart from coffee, the good people of Garage 51 and Coffee Société have now opened another cafe serving all kinds of good food with some decent coffee too. It’s called Underground Société (US) and it’s located smack in the middle of those car workshops area in Bandar Sunway. The place spots a raw casual feel with wood panelling on the walls, utilitarian-type tables and chairs and bare cement floor.
True to its calling, besides the usual servings of coffee, US serves coffee on tap. I couldn’t resist ordering that and I must say it’s pretty cool. This may sound blasphemous but I thought my glass of coffee from tap looked a bit like that famous black malt drink, tasted a bit like it too, haha!
US serves the regular gamut of appetizers, salads, soups, mains, pasta, pizzas and desserts.
They serve brunch too, until 6.00pm, offering the usual French Toasts, Eggs Atlantic, eggs served in all the typical ways and even some grilled seafood, ordered a la carte from the menu. Credit must be given to the chefs here as they do try to be creative, coming out with some unusual pairings. For example, I like their Grilled Atlantic Salmon with pesto gnocchi, saute’ed capsicum & Foyot sauce (RM36). The piece of 200g salmon was grilled perfectly, the flaky salmon was nicely pink and juicy in the middle.
Avocado is always lauded for its health and nutritional properties and this fruit is used a lot in US. Used in its raw form, the Platter of avocados with Jamaican pineapple salsa, stuffed mashed egg, couscous and caviar & feta cheese (RM26) serves as a refreshing starter.
Kudos also to the culinary team for coming up with “avodaise” – avocado blended with Hollandaise sauce in their Eggs Atlantic (RM18). It gave a creamier taste to the thick greenish sauce too.
One thing is sure – food plating in US takes on a very colorful trend. I love their efforts in brightening up their food creations with edible flowers and colourful fruits Just look at their French Toast with Nutella (RM15) and Smoked Salmon Scramble on Sourdough (RM18) – simple bread dishes yet they’re all jived up with pretty colours!
Asparagus, roasted pumpkin, broccoli, beetroot and sautéed herb potatoes are standard side items served with their Mains. What a kaleidoscope of colors they made on the plates! There’re choices for beef, lamb, chicken and fish in this category.
Grilled to just the perfect level of done-ness, the meats were all tasty and faultless. Even the Cajun Chicken Breast was executed well, the meat was tender and juicy, unlike most chicken breast dishes which more often than not, turn out dry.
Grain-fed Australian beef tenderloin with asparagus, roasted pumpkin, broccoli, beetroot, sautéed herb potatoes & Robert sauce (RM49)
Grilled NZ Lamb Rack with mint crust, asparagus, roasted pumpkin, broccoli, beetroot, sautéed herb potatoes & Robert sauce (RM45)
Grilled Cajun Chicken Breast with asparagus, roasted pumpkin, broccoli, beetroot, sautéed herb potatoes & Robert sauce (RM33)
I love the thin crust pizzas here. The Smoked Duck Pizza was adequately cheesy with generous lashings of mozzarella and parmesan and the arugula was a nice touch.
Pizza with Smoked Duck with Pesto, mozzarella, parmesan, arugula on thin crust (RM28)
Similarly, the Slipper Lobster Aglio Olio with asparagus & chilli flakes (RM34) were wholesome and satisfying.
US’ signature desserts – Underground Grenade (RM26) and Underground Fireball (RM12) contain alcohol and provided some theatrics at the table. The Grenade is essentially Chocolate Chips Mint Ice cream enclosed in meringue which is then torched once some Sambucca has been poured over it.
The Fireball would have chocolate fans raving about it. It’s a chocolate orb which melts after being torched, revealing some sinful chocolatey fudge inside.
Underground Société is a pleasant place to chill out. The culinary team tries their best to impress with their commendable presentations and there’s decent coffee to be enjoyed.
