If you have read my previous posts on Pangkor Laut Resort here and here, you would know that this gorgeous resort houses several eateries. They all have different characteristics and serve a variety of cuisines and dishes – many of them are darn good so it’s really quite hard to choose a favourite. But if I have to choose, then let me introduce you to Uncle Lim’s Kitchen.
Uncle Lim’s Kitchen is built on a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea, just a few steps beyond the water villas. I love taking the “sea route” … walking along the wooden walkway winding all the way from the water villas to the Uncle Lim’s Kitchen.
Uncle Lim’s Kitchen is open only for dinner
The main entrance to the restaurant is rather quaint, very oriental indeed with its black and red theme of a prancing horse etched on a board propped by twin wooden chairs. This is flanked by 4 bright red Chinese lanterns with tassles teased merrily by the sea breeze.
I can’t help but be awed by the beautiful ceiling of the restaurant. It is actually fashioned like a giant traditional bamboo umbrella. The massive central pillar props up the gorgeous ceiling, flaring out like an umbrella, with stunning carved woodwork in the supporting axis frame. The restaurant is built around the natural landscape – the huge boulders in it are left undisturbed in the restaurant and as you can see, this really adds to the charm of the place.
My favourite table is the one at the far side facing the sea with a 180 degrees view of the ocean. Having said that, any table in this breezy restaurant does accord diners splendid views of the Straits of Melaka.
Chef Lim Fang Tat, affectionately known as Uncle Lim has been with the resort for 29 years, ever since its opening in 1985. And this year, Uncle Lim celebrates his 80th birthday. In celebration of this milestone, Uncle Lim’s protégés have come up with a special birthday feast which highlights Uncle Lim’s favourite home-style recipes.

Egg Foo Yong – a hit with us!
Uncle Lim’s signature dishes favour Hock Chew and northern Nyonya styles as Uncle Lim was born in Penang. As such, for the special Birthday Feast, expect to savour heritage classics like Four Seasons (Egg Foo Yong, Calamari with Peanut Sauce, Lo Bak & Sweet Sour Prawns), Red Rice Wine Mee Sua, Fantasy Lobster and Steamed Garouper, fresh from the fisheries of Pangkor Island and fragranced with lemongrass and chilli.
