Anyone needs a hug today?
“As good as a hug” – yeah, that’s the brand philosophy of SOULed OUT – a name that many of us are familiar with here in the Klang Valley. After almost 2 decades in Sri Hartamas and Ampang, the 3rd outlet was opened in thriving Bangsar South recently.
Housed prominently on the ground floor of the iconic Nexus building, SOULed OUT is a spacious airy venue of food and fun. The outlet here takes on a more edgy design concept, slanting more towards an industrial warehouse feel. The wide open layout, with splashes of cheerful colours accentuating its contemporary style makes this SOULed OUT a good choice to head to for a good meal or just chilling out at any time. Well, judging by the good crowd even on a week day, it seems the good people behind the name have made an excellent choice setting this up in Bangsar South.
Our mojitos – looked very tame, right?
The De Capitated
I always have my favourite mojito in SOULed OUT simply because theirs is one of the best in town. Being a purist, I’ll go for the classic mojito while DL will never fail to have his favourite Assam Boi Mojito. Their fruity sangrias and lychee matini come a close second to the mojitos. Check out their De Capitated – it’s really cute and packed a nice punch too. Mojitos go best with fried snacks and our regular orders are usually the deep-fried Chicken Wings (RM18), Calamari Rings (RM23) and DL’s all-time love dish: Stuffed Tofu Puffs.
The Indian kitchen of SOULed OUT has always churned out good stuff in Sri Hartamas and even Ampang, so we expect nothing less than that for this outlet. Well, we were not disappointed as both the Chicken Makanwala (RM24) and Egg Sesame Naan hit the right spots. Thick and creamy, the chicken tikka chunks lurking beneath the spicy gravy were sinfully satisfying when mopped up by the fluffy naan. Of course the sesame studded eggy naan was one step above, in terms of taste and aroma factors – so good that you can just eat these on their own.
You can’t go wrong with satays, especially the beef satay – tender, tasty and nicely charred!
We had the Lamb Shank (RM39)– while it was suitably tender, I found it a tad dry. More gravy would have been perfect. The Chicken Cordon Blurr (RM26) wasn’t my favourite either. Sausage, ham and cheese were wrapped with boneless chicken thigh and deep-fried accompanied by a mountain of potato fries. I find it a bit strange to bite into a sausage here – maybe I’m just too traditionalistic.
What worked for me was their Seafood Marinara (RM25). All that’s needed for this dish to be kickass are fresh seafood and nicely done al dente pasta. The shrimps, squids and mussels were really fresh and that’s half the dish done. The tasty tomato-based sauce and al dente spaghetti did the rest.
I wasn’t too keen on the Pad Thai (RM16) as I usually only eat these Thai noodles in Thailand, having not found a very good one here. However, my dining companion totally relished it so I guess it must be pretty decent. On the other hand, the Fried Beef Noodles (RM16) were excellent. I loved the smooth gravy of the noodles and the super tender beef slices.
