Some months ago the food-blogging world was all abuzz about My CookBook. Then, it was the latest “kid on the block” and with such a catchy name, it’s no wonder everyone was excited. I decided to let the buzz cool down a bit before writing about this place… perhaps now is a good time to “remind” people about My CookBook.
Well, I was pretty excited too (having read about the place in numerous food blogs) when I went there to check this place out. Located in Sunway Giza, it’s a trendy place, serving popular Malaysian dishes, with a “modern and unique” touch. I like the chic quirky deco – one wall was decorated with all kinds of pots, pans, ladles etc!
Their food philosophy of “re-inventing” much-loved local dishes goes well with our palates. I do love how they have taken the most common dishes, tweak them with some tantalizing and “refined” touches and they are elevated notches higher,
Take for example, one of their signature items… Poached Egg with Black Cream Sauce served on Dried Scallop Toast. The egg is poached with such precision for exactly 45 minutes resulting in a perfectly wobbly yolk that is neither too runny nor too hard… and coated the crispy savoury toast immaculately. We polished off the toast + egg immaculately too, hehe! It seems they have a special machine to poach these eggs, almost to the point of using molecular technology!
Egg lovers would love this pair of Half-Boiled Eggs with Crispy Squid & Curry Butter Baguette…
I kid you not when I say My CookBook’s chef is really the Egg Specialist Extraordinaire …
This is one my favourites… Black Eyed Pea Cake with Salted Eggyolk. The peas were soft enough and its flavour was well enhanced with the addition of salted eggyolks. Much like the local yamcake, the peas- studded cake had little chunks of dried shrimps embedded and were topped with fried scallop shreds. Lovely.
More appetizers to tantalize the taste buds…
Fried Softshell Crab served with Crispy Salad and Spicy Plum Sauce (RM11.90)
Homemade Mozzarella Cheese Balls with Mashed Potatoes (RM8.90)
Coming to the mains, let’s start with one of My CookBook’s signature noodles… King Prawn Noodles in Prawn Bisque served with the 45-minute Poached Egg (RM26.90). The prawny soup was so thick and flavourful it’s no wonder that it’s labelled a “bisque”! The silky yolk from the signature egg coated the noodles to add just that extra richness to the whole concoction – heavenly!
There is the Porridge version too…
Curry Laksa with Moonfaced Fried Wantan & Poached Chicken Rolls (RM15.90)
Fried Kwayteow with Duck Egg… a very decadent version indeed. The extra-rich duck eggyolk gave the rice noodles such a deep orange hue and intense flavour which no chicken egg can ever give.
… and the twist here is that it’s served with 3 lightly-fried prawns on a bed of mashed potatoes!
If you must have rice, then go for this… Chicken Rice (RM15.90) where great pains had been taken to roll the boneless thigh meat and then covered with a layer of skin before roasting it. The rice was fragrant with the aroma of shallots, garlic and ginger… just like how good chicken rice should be.
There’s the poached chicken version too…
… or the Wantan Noodles version, doused with dry curry with the same crispy Roast Chicken roulade (RM15.90)…
Crispy Fried Chicken with Lemongrass Mayo Potato
The desserts (RM9.90) were beautifully plated, with care taken to ensure a balanced mix of colours and texture. Just take a look…
Yam Icecream with chilled Avocado Puree & Black Sesame Beancurd
Homemade Durian Icecream with Pumpkin Puree & Black Glutinuous Rice
Black Sesame Icecream with Peanut Beancurd & Barley Soyabean Milk
My favourite’s the Homemade Durian Icecream – yummy stuff!
