Step into The Malt & Leaf and the first thing that hits you is the sense of breath-taking space and height. Which isn’t really a surprise since this 4,000 sq ft intimate enclave is housed within the latest trendy entertainment hub that’s hit Petaling Jaya – The Roof.
The glass and wood elements of this elegant bar and lounge exude an air of cosiness too and if you choose to seat yourself by the curved windowed wall, you will certainly feel very elevated as you peer twenty storeys down at the sprawling scenery. The inner section of the bar takes on a more formal and elegant tone as vintage leather club chairs and hardwood flooring mark the décor. It also looks decidedly more masculine.
The Malt & Leaf styles itself as a sleek sanctuary for those who revel in cigars, international malts and some dining. To cater to their discerning guests, there’s a humidified glass space behind the bar housing 70 VIP lockers for their regular guests to store their prized cigars and malts. The Malt & Leaf offers an impressive selection of over 150 international single malts and cigars. On top of this, a full range of other liquors like brandy, gin and vodka are also available. We like how a unique twist is given to the Nikka Single Malt by adding fresh coconut water to it – very refreshing.
While The Malt & Leaf is predominantly a place for you to indulge in single malts while puffing some luxurious cigars, light tapas fare and some mains are also available in its dining menu.
Nachos with Chilli Con Carne
Soft-shell Crab Salad
Nachos served with chilli con carne (RM32), Calamari (RM19) served with tartar sauce, Soft Shell Crab Salad (RM22) and Escargots a la Bour Guignome (RM28) are all good to go with your single malts if you are not keen for heavier stuff. The nachos are our favourite – super crunchy and the chilli dip hits all the right notes.

The dining menu at The Malt & Leaf is not very extensive but it does offer several Mains options for guests who wish to have a full meal there. Pasta options come in the form of Alla Carbonara (RM26) – spaghetti with beef bacon, garlic, crème topped with mushrooms and Pollo Pesto Fettucine (RM26) – fettucine with grilled chicken tossed with basil pesto and sun-dried tomatoes.

Burger lovers would welcome the Green Monster Burger (RM33) and Black Monster Burger (RM28). The burgers come with generous portions of thick-cut fries and salad on the side. The Green Monster has a thick succulent grilled lamb patty smothered with a tangy minty green apple sauce while the Black Monster has a grilled beef patty topped with black pepper sauce. Of the two, we prefer the lamb patty with its more diverse flavours.

For die-hard steak fans, the Black Angus Tenderloin (RM88) is likely to still some cravings. It is served with pumpkin mash, garlic chocolate, aragula and saute’ed seasonal vegetables by the side. The garlic chocolate surprisingly goes well with the beef despite initial misgivings. I like the sweet-savory kick on the palate.

To end your meal on a sweet note, we’d recommend the Trio Crème Brulee (RM19) where you get 3 dainty cups of crème brulee in different flavors: ginger, coffee and classic. The texture is just right – silky smooth and not heavy on the tongue. I can’t decide which flavor I like best – all three are actually very good.

We did try the Spicy Chocolate Lava (RM22) – a lava cake served with Kahlua-infused mascarpone and a splash of berries compote by the side. We are tickled by the kick of the spicy chocolate but wished the lava was more “flowing”.
