Come 19 September 2013, the date of this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival, will you be doing a spot of moon worship and moon gazing? If you are, well, why not do it in style with some of the exquisite mooncakes from Intercontinental Kuala Lumpur?
Into its 3rd year of making and offering their special brand of mooncakes, this year Executive Chinese Chef Wong Lian You has come up with a selection of 6 new variants, in addition to their ever-popular favourites. Taking centre-stage is of course their “7 Stars Premium Collection 2013” which features the biggest mooncake made in Malaysia with a span of over 6 inches. “The hand-carved mould is specially commissioned for this mooncake and it took 5 weeks of dedicated work to produce the mould”, proclaimed Chef Wong proudly.
I had a chance to watch how this huge mooncake was made when Chef Wong demonstrated this, and another snowskin mooncake, at a special event recently. The lovely cream-colored crust of the mooncake (despite being baked) does not turn brown due to the ingredients used, ie green pea powder, almond flour, icing sugar and shortening. Cut through the mooncake and it reveals a fragrant filling which is a dark reddish plum colour as it’s made entirely of red date paste and macadamia nuts.

Four new flavours have been added to the Snow Skin range and they are the pretty Mini Duo Roseberry with Spirulina Paste & Gummi Candy, the Mini Peanut Butter with White Chocolate Paste & Mixed Nuts, the Mini White Chocolate with Dark Chocolate Paste & Rice Crunch and the Mini Tiramisu Paste with Dried Mixed Fruits and Raisins (my favourite!). For the traditional Baked Mooncakes, the Pandan Paste with Egg Custard & Walnuts and Bamboo Charcoal Paste with Pumpkin Seeds are new while other popular favourites are all available. Of course the durian variant is available too.

Nowadays, the packaging plays a critical part when buying mooncakes and every year I see the variety of styles becoming so competitive. The designs of the boxes get more “canggih” with each new year. This time round, the mooncakes from Intercontinental Kuala Lumpur come in 3 unique packaging – red and ivory Louis Vuitton-inspired handbags as well as the 7 Stars Premium Collection.
Just for the Mid Autumn Festival period (August-September 2013), an exclusive Afternoon Tea showcasing their mooncakes is available in OneSixFive at RM128++ per stand for 2 persons.
