Las Vacas, well-known as a specialty butcher shop and also for their steaks, has started serving breakfast in their Mont Kiara outlet since 1 May 2014. We were there on the very first day when their breakfast service was launched.
Sitting under their red awning (which casts a red glow on everything underneath!), we checked their breakfast menu and decided to go for one of their house signatures – the Wagyu Karubi & Eggs (RM28) and their Norwegian Benny (RM18).
Wagyu karubi are the boneless short rib slices and there were many of these sandwiched with rocket salad on Panini bread, topped with 2 poached eggs and decorated with a small heap of onions salsa. The wagyu karubi had been marinated in soy and sesame oil but I guess these were quite minimal as I could hardly detect much of their flavours. The eggs were nicely poached and the yolks burst out in runny glory, as they should. I sprinkled some salt and pepper on them and the karubi and they were good to go.
The Norwegian Benny had the same Panini bread, poached eggs, rocket salad but was topped with Hollandaise sauce and the same onions salsa. Unfortunately the eggs were terribly over-poached and because of this, we could hardly finish the entire serving.
So we ordered their All Day Breakfast (RM33) which had grilled steak, lamb, beef sausage, a sunny side-up egg and salad by the side. Quite a substantial platter and so full of protein! I liked the striploin as it was done “medium rare” – it’s slightly chewy but juicy. Lamb shoulder was served and it turned out boney and rather rubbery… perhaps a more tender cut should have been used. There’s no bread served with this, so paleo eaters will be happy to order this!
We wanted something sweet to end our breakfast and made an excellent choice in ordering their White Chocolate Strawberry Muffin (RM8). The fist-sized muffin was incredibly fragrant and when it’s cut in half, the white chocolate and strawberry filling looked really decadent. I loved the gorgeous texture of the muffin – soft and crumbly with a rich buttery flavor.
There are more hits than misses at this point – they just need to perfect their egg poaching and serve tender cuts of lamb, at least that’s what we noted from our experience this time. It’s fair to give them some time to iron out the little hitches and things should be better by now. After all, they have all the best meats and ingredients in the house!
At the moment, this breakfast is only available at their Mont Kiara restaurant and will be available in their other outlets at a later date.
