By day, Huckleberry the bakery and cafe draws the crowd with wonderful smells of freshly baked breads, pastries, cakes and freshly-brewed coffee. Their croissants are insanely good (especially the almond ones!) – my favourite any time. All these are sold out every single day, usually by late afternoon. After that, the crew would be getting geared up for their After Dark activities – sounds intriguing?
Huckleberry After Dark takes on a whole different atmosphere. The kitchen switches gear, getting ready to serve up a variety of Tex-Mex favourites and American diner-style comfort food. The bar would be open and for the non-alcoholic diners, delicious mocktails are available.
After a particularly trying day at work, I was all set to crunch my teeth on something and nachos with The House Guac (RM13.90) were just what I needed. The mushy avocado, onions, tomatoes, cilantro, green chillies, jalapeños and lime juice smeared generously onto crunchy nachos did a good start-up job. For something a bit unusual, do try the Wack Guac – with pickled ginger to perk you up.

With my appetite all worked up and raring to go, the Beast Mode (RM26.90) was a natural choice. It’s a BBQ burger with 3 combo beef patt, barbacoa pulled beef, duck bacon, lettuce, fresh tomatoes and moistened with house-made bbq sauce.

Dirty Sanchez (RM23.90) sounded irresistible and it turned out to be a guacamole burger with the same 3 combo beef patty, lettuce and made crunchy with crushed tortilla chips. Lashings of mayo-sriracha sauce and pico de gallo gave it that tangy refreshing taste.

If you love mac and cheese, then Return of the Mac (RM24.90) is a must-have. The mound of melted cheese, cream and macaroni covering the entire hotdog was quite a sight and good thing there were sprigs of fresh cilantro to balance the super-rich flavours.

What’s a Tex-Mex theme without tacos? Drop the Bass (RM19.90) and Chuck Norris (RM21.90) were the obvious choices.
Drop the Bass – battered fish tacos with house slaw, jalapeños and pico de gallo
Chuck Norris – beef barbacoa tacos with bbq-root beer sauce, fresh coriander, sour cream and pico de gallo
We just had to check out the pizzas and Another One Bites The Crust (RM32.90) appealed to our sense of curiosity. It’s like a breakfast pizza – there’s homemade tomato sauce, chicken sausage, mushrooms, lots of mozzarella and topped with an egg with a nice runny yolk.
Seeing Korean fried chicken on the menu, we just had to order some. The K-Pop Frenzy (RM19.90/6pcs) – fried chicken with spicy gochujang sauce were average – have these if you are really craving for some chicken love.

Ever since the waffle trend burst into the scene here, savoury-and-sweet waffles have been quite the rage. If you are a converted fan, check out The Bird Waffle (RM24.90) where fluffy house-made waffles are served with thick chunks of buttermilk-fried chicken thigh and hot honey sauce by the side.

We checked out two desserts on the menu which many have raved – The Mad Batter (RM19.90) and the Rollie Pollie (RM16.90). The Mad Batter is a decadent chocolate pudding in a skillet topped with all kinds of odd sweetness: chocolate cookie crumbs, caramelized marshmallows and even Tiger biscuits!
The Mad Batter
Rollie Pollie are house-made churros covered in a blanket of Nutella and crushed Oreos sprinkled with brown sugar. Be prepared to lapse into a sugar-induced coma after this. I’ll take the almond croissants any time.
