Time is really hurtling through and it’s just a matter of weeks before the Mid-Autumn Festival is celebrated – on 24 September 2018 actually. Synonymous with this festival is of course, the mooncakes and these are all already on sale in bakeries, restaurants, supermarkets and hotels – consumers here are really spoiled for choice.
Standing apart from the rest are the exquisite mooncakes from Tao Chinese Cuisine at the InterContinental Kuala Lumpur. Thoughtfully created and delicately handmade by master Dim Sum Chef Lo Tian Sion, each mooncake presents a harmonious blend of flavours from a luxurious infusion of fresh produce and traditional ingredients.

This year, Tao’s 10 exquisite mooncake picks include 6 classic baked-skin flavours, 3 translucent snow skin creations and a striking Shanghai style savoury mooncake. The special Shanghai Style Baked Black Pepper Smoked Duck Meat with Yam (上海黑椒煙鴨芋泥月餅) is clearly my favourite from Tao Chinese Cuisine. Inspired by the famous street snack, Scallion Pancake, during a trip in Taiwan, Chef Lo created this unique mooncake using black pepper smoked duck and sweet yam paste. Encased in a light and flaky pastry, the unique sweet-savoury tastes leave a memorable trail in the mouth. However, do note that this delicacy is only available for dine-in in Tao Chinese Cuisine for optimal experience.
The list of halal-certified baked mooncakes includes the best-selling White Lotus Paste with Single Yolk (单黃白莲蓉月饼), Pure White Lotus with Nuts (凈白莲蓉月饼), Red Bean Paste with Nuts (紅豆沙月饼), Black Sesame Bamboo Charcoal with Single Yolk (竹炭黑芝麻单黃月饼), Pandan with Single Yolk (单黃金翡翠月饼) and all-time favourite, Traditional Mixed Nuts (素五仁月饼).
For the snow skin collection, Tao Chinese Cuisine offers a refreshing series of colorful delights. Chef Lo’s innovative creations each year set the benchmark for snow skin mooncakes in the market. This year, 3 distinctive flavours are crafted, raising the bar once again, to fully reflect Chef Lo’s passion and dedication where innovation is concerned. On the list are Snow Skin with Durian Paste and Oats (冰皮麥香榴莲月饼), Marble Snow Skin with Butterfly Pea Flower and Bird’s Nest (蝴蝶兰花燕丝月饼) and Snow Skin with Japanese Green Tea and Cherry Jelly (冰皮绿茶樱桃月饼)
With elegant illustrations of peach blossoms (桃花) etched against a black background, the classy gift boxes with red and gold trimmings represent the true spirit of Tao Chinese Cuisine – purity, honour, elegance and richness. The gift box is provided at no cost when a minimum of 4 mooncakes are purchased or at an additional RM10 per box for purchase of 2 mooncakes.
