Celebrity Chef Wan’s restaurants need no introduction. Known as De.Wan 1958 by Chef Wan, there are currently 3 outlets with the latest one being located in Bangsar Shopping Centre. Decked out in the familiar colourful tropical fauna-theme associated with the popular chef, you will be greeted with an astounding vibrant interior décor when you enter this restaurant on Level 1 of the shopping centre. Touches of the Chef Wan’s vivacious personality can be seen in the entire interior, from the art deco items on display to the bright colours of the walls and furniture.

After being warmly greeted by the service crew, we are seated in one of the 12 private dining rooms. The menu is curated to define Malaysian cuisine and food culture – skillfully and passionately honed by Chef Wan.

To start off our meal, we just had to have our favourite Kerabu Pucuk Paku with Kerang with refreshing fern shoots, tangy spicy dressing and plump cockles. Not to miss – the Cucur Udang is another must-order item whenever we dine here! It’s a platter of addictive crispy fried fresh tiger prawns, dried shrimps, bean sprouts and chives topped with their special peanut sauce. We were recommended the Kerabu Latok with Oysters with delightful pop-in-the-mouth sea grapes, strips of young mango and fresh oysters, doused with a brown coconut paste sambal belacan!

If you are ordering a fish in this restaurant, let it be done Assam Pedas style. We had half of our Soon Hock fish done this style and the other half as Ikan Bakar served with a variety of sambals. Simmered with Chef Wan’s homemade spicy tamarind paste, the Assam Pedas will have you adding on more rice!

From the Mains category, our choices are Daging Salai Lemak Cili Api, Ayam Kapitan and the irresistible Kambing Kuzi. Trust us, these are amazingly good and signature dishes which should not be missed. This time round we checked out the Softshell Crabs in Kari Hijau Telur Asin. Saute’ed in aromatic green curry sauce, the spices and salted egg can be a bit overwhelming and is best eaten with plain rice.

Terung Sambal Udang and Mak Lodeh’s Mixed Vegetables are classic dishes in the menu with robust flavours from the sambal and spices used.

The Desserts menu has a list of classic Malay sweets. Customised platter of petite servings of a mixed selection can be arranged if you have a group dining in. These can comprise portions of their Bubur Som Som and Fruity Custards, all prettily decked and bound to get gasps of delight!

To jazz up your meal here, why not try some of their mocktails? Mint Lychee Soda, Spiced Pineapple Tonic, Fruity Sangria and Assam Boi Pineapple are some of our favourites!
