The best Korean Fried Chicken in Singapore has made its way to our local shores. I believe the Singaporeans are discerning in their love for Korean fried chicken and thus Chicken Up was established in that island state. After 7 years of delighting fans with their famous fried chicken, Chicken Up decided to bring their brand to Malaysia and the first outlet is in SS15 Subang Jaya.
Chicken Up here offers Korean fried chicken in 2 variants: soya-coated Ganjang style and Yangnyum style with the sweet tangy sticky Korean sauce. The Ganjang-style is my favourite at Chicken Up – I prefer the non-spicy version. For both the Ganjang and Yangnyum styles, spicy and non-spicy versions are available. And yes, they are really finger-licking good!

I do find their spicy version is really fiery. So, beware – the chilli is quite lethal.

Besides the fried chicken, we tried some of their signature dishes as well. There’s a list of their Top 12 Dishes, so that’s a good place to start. The Snow Squid Topokki comes in a huge portion, easily feeds 6 people! Rice cakes, fish cakes, seasonal vegetables together with a deep-fried giant squid and snow cheese came bubbling in the pot. It’s spicy, so be prepared to sweat a bit!

As fiery as the Snow Squid Topokki was, it couldn’t beat the Spicy Noodles with Popcorn Chicken that we had. OMG – these noodles practically burned a hole through my tongue and there was no way we could finish it. Caution – this is only for those who can down habanero like popcorn!

Because the name was so weird, we just had to check out the Ugly Tang and see how ugly it was. Actually it’s their version of Army Stew – you know, that stew with all the breakfast stuff like ham, sausage, baked beans, macaroni and cheese. Oh and some smoked duck and noodles too.

We then settled for some tamer dishes like the Makguksu, Yangpa Bomb and Seafood Pancake. I liked the Makguksu – refreshing cold buckwheat noodles salad tossed with lots of mixed vegetables and topped with half a boiled egg. The Yangpa Bomb was a lovely deep-fried onion with its layers of “petals” fluffed up nicely.

Colourful and refreshing drinks to help cool us down…
From L-R: Apple Juice, Mango Smoothie, Strawberry Soda & Blue Lime Soda (all at RM13 each)
For more kick and action, have the sojurita and beerita!
Sea Breeze Sojurita (RM48) & Grapefruit Beerita (RM48)
Of course dessert had to be a bingsu and we opted for the giant Melon Bingsu (RM38). Powdery soft shaved ice, vanilla ice-cream and small globes of scooped-out sweet melon, all piled inside half a melon – our dessert was just superb.
