Having just opened its doors sometime last year, Five Sen5es at The Westin Kuala Lumpur is celebrating its first Chinese New Year in 2013. And celebrate in style, it will – looking at the scrumptious special menus that are being offered.

Jade Abalone & Norwegian Salmon for Yee Sang
Recently, we were invited to check out some of the dishes and we were pampered with some really well-prepared delicacies. We love how the dishes served here are pretty unique and different from most other Chinese restaurants. Executive Chef Ng Kok Wai and his team has done a good job coming up with dishes which still retain the authentic auspicious interpretations for Chinese New Year, yet the style and presentations are exclusive and subscribe to, well, the 5 Senses; sight, smell, sound, taste and touch!
The Abundance Menu features 8 delicious dishes. Starting off the meal with Jade Abalone and Norwegian Salmon Yee Sang, we tossed the colourful salad vigorously to ensure good fortunes will be coming our way.
Unlike the usual thick starchy soups Chinese-style, the Master Poached Sea Pearl Clam and Prawns in Superior Broth was refreshing. The prawns, wrapped round the clams and still enclosed within the shells of the clams were sweet and succulent. The sweet clear broth, enhanced delicately with some Chinese herbs, was a clear favourite.

The Charcoal Roasted “Sar Tian” Five Sen5es Pigeons came with glistening and crispy skin. We loved the Cantonese Steamed Longevity Goby Fish (also known as “soon hock”) in Soy Sauce – sweet and tender, every bite was a delight.

The restaurant’s Signature Golden Sand Sea Prawns with Crispy Rice Cereals were faultlessly executed.

Mixed Vegetables with Arrowhead and Roasted Pine Nuts – simple in execution, the choice of vegetables was excellent as they were crunchy and refreshing, made more tasty by the freshly roasted pine nuts.

Hong Kong-style Waxed Meat Casserole Rice… so fragrant thanks to the waxed duck, pork and Chinese sausages.
I think Five Sen5es’ Gold Coin Chinese New Year Nian Gou is really the best I have tasted so far. Expertly pulled and shaped like ancient Chinese gold coins, there’s even a filling of Japanese sweetened yam inside. The cubed fresh fruits and coconut shavings, besides being visually appealing, tasted great with the soft sweet Nian Gou.

The nian gao tasted the best served simple in this way 🙂
Yep, that’s my favourite!
