“Nothing fancy, simply good food” - that’s the promise from Maria’s and I was there recently to check this out. The steak cafe in Metropolitan Square, Damansara Perdana is cosy and comfortable. There’s a homely feel to the place, perhaps due to the checkered table cloths covering the dark wood tables. Service is friendly, efficient and pleasant. My dinner starts with their Spicy Mussels (RM22) - 6 plump mussels smothered with a spicy tomato-based sauce. The thick sauce is very … [Read more...]
Launch of “MEATOLOGY” by Chef Yenni Law
In the short space of time that I had interacted with Chef Yenni Law, I found that I enjoyed her company very much. Oh she was quick to tell me to quit calling her “chef” and insisted that I just call her by her name. I met Yenni for the very first time at the media launch of her cookbook “Meatology” at her restaurant, Boathouse in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur. Yenni was in the midst of an interview when I spotted her and I thought she kinda looked a bit ill-at-ease when the cameras … [Read more...]
Surisit Thai Kopitiam, Petaling Jaya
The first Surisit Thai Kopitiam is in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI), opened in 2011. Read my review on that here. The kopitiam-style of serving simple authentic Thai food, with porky twists, is a great hit with its clientele. In fact, it’s so well-received that owner Rivon Gill decided to open its 2nd outlet in Petaling Jaya not too long ago. Located along the same row as the famous O&S Coffeeshop, Surisit PJ is a good place to head to for some Thai food indulgence. The eatery is … [Read more...]
Unique Seafood @ Kota Damansara
Live seafood swimming in tanks may seem squeamish to some but at Unique Seafood, that’s the only way to serve it. Freshness is their top priority. “From the tank to the table” seems to be their motto and seafood lovers can’t be happier. Unique Seafood is one of the earliest restaurants to venture into this live seafood concept. I recall the first time I dined in their Section 13 Petaling Jaya outlet many years ago, it was a roaring novelty then. Looking at the many tanks lining up … [Read more...]
My Elephant – scrumptiously Thai
I have heard many good things of My Elephant prior to visiting it recently. Friends have been telling me how this neighbourhood Thai restaurant has been jiving up the dining scene in Section 17 Petaling Jaya for many years and keeping the diners happy with their delicious yet affordable fares. My Elephant was packed to the rafters on the week night that I was there. I was told it’s always packed on any day of the week. My meal started off with Miaeng Kum (RM18), the fold-it-yourself … [Read more...]
Dining at Crave & chilling out at W XYZ Bar, Aloft Bangkok
In our recent trip to Bangkok, we chose to stay at the Sukhumvit area and Aloft Bangkok was a natural choice. The hotel is located in Soi 11, quite possibly one of the hippest spots in town. All around the hotel are bars, cafes, restaurants, shopping outlets and the Nana BTS Skytrain and MRT station are all in the vicinity. Just like the other Alofts, Aloft Bangkok shines with the same urban hip with modern savvy design as its theme. The hotel, with all its outlets, breathe “energy” and “fun” … [Read more...]
Leng Loong Seafood Restaurant – where Lenggong favourites abound!
This no-frills restaurant serves simple home-style dishes, leaning more towards Kong Sai (or “Kong Xi”) flavours. Its location in Taman Equine may seem a bit off-the-beaten-track but it’s actually fairly easy to get there, coming from the Kesas Highway. The chef is from Lenggong, a little town in northern Perak with a major community of Kong Sai residents. So that explains the Kong Sai influence in the dishes here. With the Chinese New Year upon us and 15 days of celebration ahead, if you … [Read more...]
Blossoms of Fortune for Chinese New Year at Zuan Yuan, One World Hotel
There’s a change in command in the kitchen of Zuan Yuan these days. Chef Heng Sze Hooi, Assistant Chinese Chef together with his team have come up with some delectable dishes for the Chinese New Year, which is just days away. I must say that’s a very refreshing change and things are looking good there. Having dined there very often, I like the changes, some subtly, in the flavours of Zuan Yuan’s offerings. It is also timely that diners now get to taste Chef Heng’s creations during this … [Read more...]
Have A Teochew Feast at Pak Loh Chiu Chow Restaurant this Chinese New Year
I’ve always liked Teochew cuisine. Teochew dishes tend to be kinder on the palate and stomach due to the gentler cooking methods. Signature Teochew dishes are often prepared over a slow fire, stewed, steamed or just simply sti-fried. Oh, they also do their pickles perfectly. Pak Loh Chiu Chow Restaurant is one of those restaurants that do all those perfectly. Did you know that Teochew-style Yee Sang is quite different from the regular eye sang served in most restaurants? I had my … [Read more...]
Celebrate Chinese New Year in style at Noble Mansion, Plaza 33 Petaling Jaya
The name itself speaks volumes. Noble Mansion – arguably one of the Oriental Group of Restaurants' most stylish outlets. Not only is the décor impressive, the whole ambience reminds one of a traditional mansion given an elegant modern twist. This is also where Executive Chef Justin Hor unleashes his creative flair in the repertoire of Shunde-influenced dishes that Noble Mansion is famous for. Read my earlier review here. I was hooked ever since the first time I dined here. So when I … [Read more...]
