The Armada Hotel in Petaling Jaya is one of the oldest hotels around. Overlooking the Federal Highway, this stalwart hotel still stands valiant with its regular clientele despite being slightly overshadowed by bigger and newer competitors just an arm’s length away. I remember, many many years ago (like maybe 30?!), their Merchant Bar is the most happening joint in town and was a favourite haunt of mine. Fast forward 3 decades and I recently revisited the Armada Hotel to check out its festive offerings for the coming Chinese New Year celebrations.
Despite not having a proper Chinese restaurant in its premise, the hotel management still adheres to the belief that when the festive season calls, special meals befitting the occasion must be made available. The Armada Hotel holds on to this tradition steadfastly and that’s probably the secret to its indomitable and enduring spirit.
Deep-fried Garoupa Thai-style
To welcome the Year of the Boar, Chef Chew and his team at the Utara Coffee House will be serving various “good luck” dishes on the Chinese New Year Reunion Buffet Dinner from now till 4 February 2019. Why not try having a buffet dinner for this coming reunion gathering? It’s flexible, relaxing and everyone can eat at a pace he/she is comfortable with!
Wok-fried Tiger Prawns with Buttered Coconut Almond Flakes

Do look out for special dishes like Chinese Fried Chap Chye with Mushrooms, Yam Rice in Lotus Leaf, Pak Far Chicken, Deep Fried Garoupa Thai Style, Stir-Fried Kam Heong Lala and Wok-fried Tiger Prawns with Buttered Coconut Almond Flakes, just to name a few. I must say I’m pretty impressed with the quality of the dishes presented during the food tasting. Chef Chew’s capabilities and deft hands worked their magic – the dishes were tasty with authentic flavours and nuances which only experience and skills can breed.
