De.Wan 1958, more affectionately known as “Chef Wan’s Restaurant” is truly a Malaysian enterprise. While Malay cuisine remains its mainstay, it also showcases celebratory dishes during the major festivals, reflecting the Muhibbah culture of Malaysia.

We visited the restaurant in Bangsar Shopping Centre recently to check out their special set menus prepared for the coming Chinese New Year.

Upon entering, one cannot help but be impressed by the gorgeous interior design. The visual masterpieces of the dining hall and private rooms are inspired by British colonial heritage elements and it never fails to take my breath away. The vibrant colors of lush flora and fauna provide a feast for the eyes even before the menu is opened.

There are 3 festive Set Menus “Feasts for Prosperity & Happiness” ranging from RM1,288++ to RM1,988++ for 9-10 pax. The sets comprise of a “Prosperity Toss” as starter, followed by 5 main courses accompanied by 2 types of rice and ending with 2 -3 desserts.
Starter
Golden Jade Prosperity Toss
Crisp Snow Pear, Golden Sauces and Vibrant Veggies for cascading fortune.
This Yee Sang is indeed unique as it features fresh fruits and vegetables with some Malay/Indonesian touches in the form of crisp tempe and quail eggs. 3 types of sauces were served, one of which was a fragrant peanutty concoction, similar to a Gado-gado sauce. Everything blends well, giving this Yee Sang a refreshing Malaysian tapestry.

Main Courses 主膳
Five Blessings Steamed Fish
Steamed siakap topped with chili padi, lemongrass, ginger, and tomato for harmony and prosperity.

House-style lamb slow-braised in an aromatic green opor coconut gravy.

Auspicious Jumbo Sotong
Jumbo sotong gently simmered in an aromatic coconut gravy, rich with coastal spices and depth of flavour.

Ayam glazed in orange-butter sauce for prosperity and family unity.

Wok-fried vegetables with aromatic belacan for bold umami and prosperity.

The 5 main courses showcase the typical culinary finesse of food served in Chef Wan’s restaurants. The dishes are very Malaysian with a rich mix of spicy, sweetish and tangy flavours. The Golden Orange Treasure Chicken and Four Treasures Belacan King Vegetables are more “Chinese-inspired” in line with the festive sentiments.
The flavourful main courses definitely need to be eaten with rice (we are Malaysians!) and 2 types of colorful rice are presented, with unlimited refills.
Rice 主食

To accompany the meal, we like the 2 specially-concocted refreshing lychee-based drinks. Both the Jade Lychee Sparkle and Imperial Lychee Sparkle are at RM15++ per glass.
Jade Lychee Sparkle
Refreshing lychee with watermelon and lime, delicately infused with mint and pandan, finished with soda and adorned with an edible blossom and hanging lychee
