Yes! They serve LUNCH now! I mean, Nong & Jimmy does. Nong & Jimmy at a new location, helmed by a new management crew too.
You can’t miss the bright yellow signboard!
Mention “Nong & Jimmy” and odds are that many will know of this popular eatery in Ampang that has been drawing the crowds for many years. This eatery used to be housed in a rustic dwelling which was extended by putting up more zinc roofs and adding on tables and chairs. They used to open only in the evenings for dinner and by 5pm, more than half their tables would already be filled up. We always made sure we were there by 5.30pm.
Nong & Jimmy has recently moved to a new location in Kampung Ampang. It’s just further down the road from where they used to be. The premise is now larger with an air-conditioned section as well. For lunch, only Thai a la carte dishes are served and the BBQ is available for dinner from 5.30pm onwards. As we’ve never had lunch in Nong & Jimmy before, we were eager to check out their offerings.
Mango and fried chicken were quite the unlikely pair. However, Mango Salad Chicken was an appetizer that started the meal on the right foot. The tangy flavours of shredded young mango and spicy Thai dressing paired well with the crunchy fried chicken.
We thoroughly enjoyed the Kaeng Som Steamed Fish which was like a complete dish by itself. Besides the fleshy seabass, there were lots of vegetables like cauliflower, long beans, baby sweetcorn, carrots, broccoli, kangkong and pineapples swimming in the sweet-sour gravy. Lots of fire came in the form of pounded red chillies dotting the sauce and this called for more white rice! The fish was fresh and this dish alone would be enough to satisfy a bunch of rice lovers.
Nong & Jimmy’s Thai Otak-otak was served inside a coconut and filled to the brim with seafood and spicy custard. Dig all the way in to savour the huge portion. Unlike our local otak-otak, the custard was a tad dry and lumpy but the flavours were good enough.
BBQ crabs are what’s Nong & Jimmy is famous for. However, since their BBQ was only available for dinner, we tried the Black Pepper Crabs which tasted more lethal than they looked. The medium-sized crabs came with a delicious-looking dark sheen on the shells. The black pepper had its own brand of heat and each bite became more fiery than the last.
It was a first for us – eating noodles at Nong & Jimmy, specifically their Thai Laksa. The bright red fishy gravy was served separately which was a good thing as you could then control the amount you could take. Raw shredded cucumber, pineapple, onions, cabbage and chopped long beans gave some refreshing crunch to the soft white rice noodles. The flavours were truly bold and sweat-inducing, trust me.
Eat with caution – it’s full of fire!
Just look at that lethal gravy!
Better start with a smaller portion 😉
When we dined at the old location, we never failed to order their legendary fried rice. So we checked out two of their fried rice items – Pineapple Fried Rice and Seafood Fried Rice. They were decent but not as good as the version served in the old location – ahhh…how we missed that!
So head on to Nong & Jimmy if you are looking for some tantalizing and hearty Thai fares.
