Tucked in the commercial centre of Bukit Jelutong, Kayu Manis Seafood Restaurant is one of the very few halal seafood restaurants in this area. Occupying a spacious corner lot, its unmistakable colourful purple-and-green interior can be glimpsed from the road in front.
You can’t miss the vibrant colours of the restaurant!
The bigger round tables are meant for larger dining groups while the square tables by the side cater to smaller groups. Live seafood are kept in tanks for diners to pick and choose their crabs, fish and clams.
The interior is simple, the lime green walls giving an artsy background to the purple and pink tablecloths
We were told their live Mud Crabs were at RM78/kg. We chose 4 crabs, to be cooked in two different ways.
For a taste of their natural flavours, we had Steamed Crabs. The 2 crabs were steamed with egg white and submerged in a flavoursome broth enhanced with some ginger strips and coriander leaves. We couldn’t stop slurping the umami broth and the smooth egg white. The crabs were sweet and succulent. Those 2 crabs weighed 800g and cost RM62.40.
The smooth egg white custard and delicious broth have infused all the sweet flavours from the crabs
We had another 2 crabs cooked with black pepper. The fresh crabs were really tasty cooked with black pepper, ginger and spring onions. Our only gripe was the gravy was too starchy. These 2 Black Pepper crabs were 850g and cost RM66.30.
The Squids in Salted Eggyolk (RM21) were good, too. Evenly coated with the salted egg yolk, the squids were fragrant, having been tossed with some curry leaves and chopped chillies.
The grainy salted egg yolk gave these squids an unbelievablele aroma!
We couldn’t resist the Butter Prawns (RM30). The medium-sized prawns were served buried under a pile of thin buttery strands. It was rather oily at the base and taste-wise, it needed a bit more salt. Other than those, the prawns were sweet and fresh.
The natural sweetness of the prawns shone through those buttery strands
Besides fresh seafood, Kayu Manis also lists other meat, vegetables, rice and noodles dishes on its menu. If still hungry after all those seafood, have the Yong Chow Fried Rice with Crabmeat (RM11) or the Beef Ginger Kway Teow (RM11). Both were executed well, with “wok hei” to boot. We could hear the roaring fire in the kitchen from where we were seated and knew that the dishes would be cooked well.
Full of “wok hei”, you can’t go wrong with this signature fried rice!
Eggy gravy, smooth slithery kwayteow and tender beef slices – a killer combo where these noodles are concerned!
