Ah Boy Kwayteow T’ng, Penang
Have you heard about this stall? Apparently most of the locals in Penang want to keep this secret. In a recent trip up north to Penang, we were told to search for this place along Argyll Road. So the Sunday before we left the island, we dutifully drove along Argyll Road looking out for a push cart that reputedly serves one of the best Kwayteow T’ng on the island. As we took the turn-off from Penang Road and drove down Argyll Road (which is a one-way street), we couldn’t spot any cart. … [Read more...]

Highlights of My Twenty Thirteen
HAPPY NEW YEAR! Yes, 2014 is upon us. This is when everyone will exclaim how incredibly fast the previous year has passed and they can’t believe that a new year has been ushered in in the blink of an eye. It’s true – I feel the same way too. I also notice that the older you grow, the faster the years seem to zoom past. Looking back at my calendar, 2013 has been a good year for me. It has been kind to me and I am very blessed. There was no major illness, no major mishap and aside from some … [Read more...]
Kampachi opens in Plaza 33, Petaling Jaya
We were intrigued by this huge brown ball hanging at the entrance of Kampachi in Plaza 33, Petaling Jaya. It stands on ceremony under its own “roof” and from far, it looked like some kind of hive. This is what they call a “sugidama” or sake ball made out of cedar twigs, a traditional sign hung over doors of sake breweries to signal the new arrival of sake to customers. When hung outside restaurants, it’s a sure sign that high quality sake is served in the premise. And that is why there’s … [Read more...]

A Culinary & Dining Experience with Chef Sam Leong @ Tao, InterContinental Kuala Lumpur
After an extensive and intensive 2-month refurbishment, the InterContinental Kuala Lumpur proudly unveiled its stunning and stylish Tao Chinese Cuisine recently. The makeover of this Chinese restaurant included an overall change in concept and dining experience, a cohesive mix of traditional and contemporary elements. It felt like dining in a peach blossom garden! “Tao” is named after a peach tree originating in China, so it isn’t surprising that once you walk through the main entrance … [Read more...]
Penang Food Stories (Chapter 1) – Food hunting in Pengkalan Weld
In the past few months, we made a couple of food trips to Penang. The main objective was really to gorge ourselves silly, checking out food places recommended by friends as well as re-visiting old favourites. Of course not everything we ate was worth recommending to others, so I’ll just skip those not-so-good ones. In those many hours that we spent on the island (and also in the mainland), we must have worked ourselves through at least a hundred dishes/food items! After driving for more than … [Read more...]
Gurney Delights @ Kota Kemuning
No, you didn’t read it wrong – there IS a place called “Gurney Delights” in Kota Kemuning, Shah Alam. It’s a neat little café, unpretentious and simplistic in its set-up, located in the midsection of a block of shoplots in the Kota Kemuning commercial centre. I first noticed this outlet some months ago, yet had never set foot into it until a couple of weeks ago. There were a good many tables occupied, so I took that as an encouragement and gamely tugged DL along last weekend. We’re always … [Read more...]
