An offshoot of the more-established Zukkini in Oasis Ara Damansara, Mustardfields proves to be a hidden gem in Mont Kiara. It is actually quite hidden from the main road and you would need to know where exactly to turn in to the carpark and entry into this cafe. It’s located in a standalone building, with welcoming rustic vibes etched in its modern industrial elements of exposed concrete beams, naked brick walls and warm timber accents.

We were there for brunch so there was plenty of cheery sunlight pouring in, which immediately perked up the casual coziness of the place.

The menu mirrors its sister establishment Zukkini as we spotted familiar items. Echoing the same culinary philosophy of merging the best of Australian and Asian ingredients and techniques, Mustardfields celebrates this diversity in its rich and varied menu selections.

We started off the Thai-inspired Kadok Leaf, a toast to the original Mieng Kham. So, we diligently wrapped betel leaves with chopped ginger, lime, bunga kantan, toasted dried shrimps, peanuts with toppings of sambal belacan, coconut sambal and a sweet tangy umami dressing.

It wasn’t long before our Truffled Scramble was served. Gratifying crispy grilled sourdough slices with soft creamy scrambled eggs, truffle oil, truffle paste, mushrooms, Grana Padano cheese, rocket, furikake and tobiko – can’t go wrong.

We seldom see gnocchi served in cafes so we just had to try the Creamy Gnocchi with Ragu. It turned out to be a happy choice – pillowy gnocchi in creamy bechamel sauce with chicken & duck ragu (slow cooked over 6 hours) and topped with fried kale, edamame, feta and parmesan cheese. Simple robust flavours which drove home the “comfort food” vibes totally!

We couldn’t resist their Mustardfields Tostadas – Crispy tostadas encasing sesame-crusted aburi tuna, nori with guacamole, sriracha aioli, ponzu glaze and topped with tobiko and cherry tomatoes. We liked every crunchy bite of these.

Likewise, the Soft Shell Crab Bao Buns were enjoyable – crispy softshell crabs cushioned in soft lotus bao buns, slathered with “masak merah” aioli and tangy cabbage slaw.

We were not impressed by the Minute Steak Benedict simply because the piece of 120g minute steak was kinda overcooked despite our request for “medium/medium rare”. However, the fluffy Yorkshire pudding was excellent and we mopped up the poached egg with it.

Spring Onion Waffles with Sichuan Hot Honey Chicken – Airy waffles with crisp boneless fried chicken tossed in house-made Sichuan hot honey and served with cabbage apple slaw, pickled ginger and furikake. Drizzle with maple syrup before eating – a failsafe brunch item.

The cake counter in the centre is strategically placed as just about every diner is enticed to try the sweet offerings under the glass covers.

Orange Espresso & Mint Lychee Soda

Pineapple Matcha Latte
The dinner menu looked very interesting but the items are only available from 6pm onwards so we didn’t get to try them this round. That gives us a good reason to return later.
Whether it’s for a quick brunch, a dinner, or a place to catch up with friends, Mustardfields offers some unique selections in a casual cosy ambience.
