Throughout this month, you can get a taste of special tea-infused dishes at Zuan Yuan, the Chinese restaurant in One World Hotel. Chef Michael Chew has concocted a variety of dishes using premium Chinese tea leaves like "Loong Jin", "Wu Loong", "Ti Kuan Yin", Jasmine and Chrysanthemum. In a special preview recently, I got to taste some of Chef Chew's creations. Before the tea-infused dishes were served, we had our appetites whetted by a Speciality Platter of fried yam puff and smoked duck … [Read more...]
New Menu at Villa Danieli, Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur
Chef Alessandro Graziosi, the new chef at Villa Danieli @ Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur will be cooking up quite a storm in the coming days. A preview of some of his recipes set the pace for some exciting dishes to be included in Villa Danieli’s menu. From my earlier posts here and here, Villa Danieli remains one of my favourite Italian restaurants in the city. Well, apart from the food, the restaurant set-up is gorgeous... rusticly chic... it's never overwhelming that you feel equally … [Read more...]
Hi-Tea @ Dondang Sayang, Corus Hotel Kuala Lumpur
It's the weekend and what better way to kick back, relax and hangout with some family or friends over a spread of unlimited food than to go for a Hi-Tea session. Yes, Hi-Tea or High Tea, if you please. It's interesting to find out that there is a difference between High Tea and Afternoon Tea. The latter, started in the UK, is more like a social gathering for ladies of the elite & leisure and it involves manners, lace and dainty foods and tea, of course. This afternoon soiree usually takes … [Read more...]
Launch of the All-New BMW 3-series
Let's do a non-food post today, for a little change... although I must say the subject matter is more sumptuous than any food. Since late last week, car enthusiasts have all been busy talking about the latest baby in the car scene... the all-new BMW 3-series, that's what it is. The official launch by BMW Malaysia was celebrated over 2 evenings last week at The Mines Convention Centre. I chose to go on the 1st evening, because... well, simply because I just couldn't wait to see the car. Of … [Read more...]
Indonesia Food & Cultural Festival @ Mosaic, Mandarin Oriental KL
Recently I was privileged to attend the launching of the Indonesia Food & Cultural Festival at Mosaic, Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur. The event was officially launched by Mr Mulya Wirana, Charge D'Affaires from the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia. Prior to dinner, guests were treated to some traditional Gamelan music and a "Lenggang Nyai" Indonesian dance, while sipping on specially-concocted drinks and nibbling on canapes at the Lounge on the Park. During the course of dinner, we … [Read more...]
Good Ole Hakka Fare @ Chen Fatt
Seri Kembangan is what they call the “Hakka Heartland” due to the majority of Chinese residents living in that area being Hakkas. I seldom venture into Seri Kembangan although I know there are lots of restaurants and shops serving delicious stuff there. The reason for this reluctance is because of the horrendous traffic choking up the entry roads into Seri Kembangan, except maybe on weekends and even so, it all depends on the time of day. Anyway, despite my reluctance, there ARE 2 reasons I … [Read more...]
Rama V – more pretty stuff!
I went back to Rama V again last Sunday for their Weekend Lunch because… well, because it’s such a good deal and because some friends wanted to go check it out, too. There’s hardly any place around KL that can offer a all-you-can-eat meal PLUS free-flowing wine and beer for less than RM100 … and that’s how I ended up there again in Rama V… two Sundays in a row! I just want to share some photos of a few items we had last week… they are a sight for the eyes as well as the tummy! Kra Tong … [Read more...]
Rama V’s Weekend Lunch a la carte Buffet – such decadence!
The few times I have eaten at Rama V had always been at dinner time and thus, I had always been treated to the beautiful and romantic ambience that dusk and night brings to the place. Warm amber lamps would light up the garden and lotus pond, casting flickering shadows among the foliage and golden shimmers on the water - all these give Rama V a magical mysterious air after sunset. Recently I had a chance to step into Rama V in broad daylight. It was a hot and sultry Sunday afternoon, with … [Read more...]
The Best of East Coast Flavours at Makan Kitchen, DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur
Growing up in my kampung ("village") in Ipoh where I was surrounded by many Malay friends, I have always been partial to Malay cuisine. Influenced by my friends and neighbours, pounding sambal belacan in a mortar was a regular thing for me. I also became very adept at cooking "Ikan Masak Lemak Chili Api" (fish cooked in a spicy coconut broth with bird's eye chillies) and my earliest childhood memory of the yummiest Malay dish was this awesome "Sambal Sotong Tumis" (squids cooked in spicy chilli … [Read more...]
Rama V Fine Thai Cuisine – Loy Krathong Festival Charity Dinner
My first encounter with Rama V - that fine-dining Thai restaurant in Jalan U Thant, Kuala Lumpur, not the famous king of Siam, was when I had the privilege of being invited to their Loy Krathong Festival Charity Dinner, sometime late last year. Prior to that, I had of course, heard and read so much about this elegant restaurant with its unique lotus pond and lush garden setting. On that particular evening, the whole courtyard and garden took on a festive air as guests chatted and mingled … [Read more...]
