Restoran Lucky, Ipoh – premium food at premium prices!
As a native of Ipoh, I know very well that good food can be found all over the town. Not only is Ipoh famous for its “nga choy kai” (blanched bean sprouts with poached chicken), hor fun (rice noodles), chee cheong fun (steamed rice noodles) and salt-baked chicken, good seafood is also widely available and enjoyed, if you know where to get the best. In Ipoh, you don’t need to travel to the seaside to have a great seafood meal. Right in the center of town, there’s a small restaurant that has … [Read more...]
Good old favourites at Kampar Old Town Kopitiam, Kota Kemuning
Food outlets open and close so often nowadays in Kota Kemuning that it’s not surprising the residents can’t really keep up with the dynamics. In the town center, what used to house a Pan Mee restaurant has now given way to Kampar Old Town Kopitiam. This kopitiam is run by the family of Leong Kok Ying who is the founder of the famous Restaurant Wing Lok Yuen in Kampar. Located along Kampar town’s main street – Jalan Idris, that restaurant was founded in 1947. Wing Lok Yuen is the original … [Read more...]
Restoran Boston Baru, Klang
Have you ever been to a restaurant at 5pm (for dinner) and wait for it to open? This must be the only restaurant I have done something like that! I have heard so much about this plac, the incredible crowds it draws and the ridiculous queues. So, one fine Saturday evening we were there at 5pm. They were not opened yet and we stood in front of the restaurant a good 45 minutes waiting for it to open! The must-order item here is its famous Steamed Lala in Supeior Stock. We … [Read more...]
Sandakan Food Trail (1)
Did you know that Sandakan is a great place for foodies? Haha, I didn’t know that until I had a chance to visit this quaint town recently. It’s actually the 2nd biggest town in Sabah and located at the north-eastern tip of the state. Sandakan is actually very rich historically, with many places of interest worth visiting but being the glutton and foodie that I am, I shall share its bountiful food offerings first. As Sandakan is also a port, its location next to the sea means the … [Read more...]
Penang Food Stories (Chapter 3): Song River Cafe @ Gurney Drive
I know some people scoff at Song River Cafe being a good place to eat in Penang, maintaining that it’s only meant for tourists and that most self-respecting Penangites would not patronize that place. Well, I’m not really bothered about this, because I have my favourite dishes there and yeah, I am not a Penangite – call me a “visitor” or “tourist” if you like but I do like to have a meal or two in Song River Cafe whenever I’m in Penang. Facing the sea, along Gurney Drive, Song River Cafe … [Read more...]
Penang Food Stories (Chapter 2): Lam Ah Kopitiam – damn nice Beef Noodles & Oyster Omelette
“Gubak Kway Teow”, that’s what the Penangites call their Beef Kway Teow (flat Rice Noodles). It seems that Penang had 2 famous Gubak Kway Teow outlets founded way back in the 1960s, one was at Victoria Street and the other’s at the junction of Beach Street (now Lebuh Pantai) and Acheen Street (now Lebuh Acheh). The one formerly at Acheen Street has now moved to Lam Wah Kopitiam, at the junction of Lebuh Pantai and Lebuh Chulia (opposite the Lebuh Pantai fire station) where it has been … [Read more...]
Penang Food Stories (Chapter 1) – Food hunting in Pengkalan Weld
In the past few months, we made a couple of food trips to Penang. The main objective was really to gorge ourselves silly, checking out food places recommended by friends as well as re-visiting old favourites. Of course not everything we ate was worth recommending to others, so I’ll just skip those not-so-good ones. In those many hours that we spent on the island (and also in the mainland), we must have worked ourselves through at least a hundred dishes/food items! After driving for more than … [Read more...]
Uncle Seng’s Homemade Noodles @ Subang Jaya
The other day LL came home all excited about some noodles joint he's tried and was all eager to introduce me to. He was raving about the special noodles he'd eaten there and couldn't wait to take me there! "So where is this noodles place?", I asked LL. He said "I don't know". See, that's LL for you. "BUT, I know how to get there!" he added. Okaayyy... well, considering that the last eatery LL recommended me turned out to be very good, I was game to go check out his latest discovery. So, … [Read more...]
That Famous "Klang Thong Yuen" in Pin Chou
Not too long ago I received an invitation from a blog reader asking me to go check out some food served in Restoran Pin Chou.... somewhere in Klang. I had no idea where this place could be ... so what did I do? I turned to Google Maps. I absolutely love Google. I think Google is one of da best things to have ever been invented on planet Earth! Dang - I can find out just about anything in Google! Just like the other day when my boss asked me how to curve something in Powerpoint (having just … [Read more...]
