My first encounter with Rama V - that fine-dining Thai restaurant in Jalan U Thant, Kuala Lumpur, not the famous king of Siam, was when I had the privilege of being invited to their Loy Krathong Festival Charity Dinner, sometime late last year. Prior to that, I had of course, heard and read so much about this elegant restaurant with its unique lotus pond and lush garden setting. On that particular evening, the whole courtyard and garden took on a festive air as guests chatted and mingled … [Read more...]
Deepavali Class @ Bayan Indah
HAPPY DEEPAVALI! I know I'm a bit late in posting this Deepavali greeting but then I guess many of us are still in the Deepavali mood so maybe this is not too late after all. You know how we Malaysians celebrate all kinds of festivals and most times these celebrations extend beyond the actual date and I'm sure Deepavali is no exception! A few weekends ago I participated in a Deepavali-themed class at Bayan Indah - those of you who read my blog regularly will know that Bayan Indah is one … [Read more...]
Taste of India @ Essence, Sheraton Imperial, Kuala Lumpur
Even before I actually stepped into the warm ambience of Essence in Sheraton Imperial, Kuala Lumpur, the scents of Indian spices, herbs and incense filled the air around me. And then the sight of a colorful kolam and traditional candle lights laid out on a table just after the main entrance completed the whole kaleidoscope of aroma, colour and sensation - an evening of indulgence on exotic authentic Indian cuisine. In celebration of the fascinating burst of sensations and infinite … [Read more...]
Xara’s Food Trail
I have known Xara since we were in primary school. Yes, way back in Ipoh. When we entered secondary school, both of us cycled to school... and that was the beginning of many after-school "extra-curricular" activities. We'd cycle to town to watch our favourite chinese kungfu movies, parking our bicyles for 10sen per movie in those makeshift sheds beside the cinemas (Lido, Cathay, Rex & Majestic were our usual haunts). We'd pay 65sen for the lowest class seats and we'd litter the floors with … [Read more...]
Roti Canai Pandamaran
Roti Canai. This famous popular Malaysian Indian pancake that's synonymous with Life here. I can't imagine life without roti canais, can you? So, because it is sooo everywhere and everyone has their favourite shop/stall for this, it doesn't get blogged about much. Well, at least I haven't. Not until I've heard so much about this one … [Read more...]
A taste of India in Maharaj
Exactly a week ago, I almost fell off my chair when I received a phone call from Eu Hooi Khaw. I mean, come on... Eu Hooi Khaw calling me??! And that call was to invite me to join her for dinner... at a place called Maharaj. The invitation was on behalf of the owner, Mr Ilan Govan who's a close friend of hers. Her directions to the place were: "it's along Jalan Gasing, PJ, in a bungalow lot next to a furniture shop". I had a vague idea of where the restaurant could be. It was a rainy stormy … [Read more...]
