The Dynasty Restaurant in Renaissance Kuala Lumpur Hotel has recently been converted into a Pork-free eatery. While some chefs may find this a challenge, ie cooking Chinese food without pork may somewhat affect the flavours of the dishes, Executive Sous Chef Kok Chee Kin has crafted a repertoire which proved to be just as good. I had a sampling of some of the new dishes and came away happy and impressed that they were all good! I didn’t think the food was any less superior as the tastes and textures were well maintained by the excellent freshness of alternative ingredients like chicken and seafood.
Chicken and prawns featured predominantly in the Dim Sum items, for both the deep-fried and steamed varieties. I really enjoyed the sweet bouncy texture of the Crispy Prawn Toasts studded with sesame seeds and this sentiment was obviously shared by my fellow diners.
The Golden Yam Puffs were some of the best I’ve had, seriously. Light powdery yam paste covered with fine filigreed batter encased a delicious saucy filling of minced chicken – mad skills at work there.
Crispy Prawn Toast with Sesame
The steamed dim sum all had generous fillings of succulent minced prawns and chicken. Served piping hot, every item epitomised what good dim sum should be.

Minced Chicken Dumplings with Dried Scallops & Ebiko
I also tried some of the main dishes on the menu and my favourites were the Baked Cod Portuguese style and Szechuan-style Beancurd. Fresh flaky sweet slices of cod fish tossed in a spicy flavoursome sauce together with French beans, ladies fingers, aubergines and petai called for bowls of plain rice! This was Chef Kok’s take on infusing some local spicy flavours into Chinese food.
Baked Cod Portuguese style
Equally appetizing was the claypot of bubbling beancurd with assorted vegetables and mushrooms. This would be something I’d order again and again.

There were several other dishes I tried and all did well – delicious flavours reminiscent of well-executed Chinese dishes…
Deep-fried Oysters
BBQ Chicken with Glazed Honey Sauce
Aromatic Duck Breast – smoked with tea leaves
Oriental Grilled Lamb with Mongolian sauce, saute’ed greens and diced mango
The variety of roasted and barbequed specialties together with a selection of beef, venison and lamb more than made up for the lack of pork in Dynasty Restaurant.
Mango Puree with Sago & Pomelo
Dynasty Restaurant is open daily for lunch from 12.00pm till 2.30pm and dinner from 6.30pm to 10.30pm. Dim Sum breakfast is served from 9.30am to 2.30pm on Sundays and Public Holidays.
