When I read that “Viking buffets are well-known in Japan and are feasts of flavours” (from the press release issued by InterContinental Hotel), I was curious. To be honest, I have never heard of “Viking buffets” and certainly didn’t know that it’s famous in Japan.
So I did a bit of research and found out something interesting.
From a little story published online (of which I have no way of authenticating), I read that “Viking” actually refers to a buffet meal in Japan. It seems that back in the 1950’s post-WWII, a Japanese restaurant owner visited Sweden and was smitten by the Swedes’ smörgåsbord (buffet) meals. He then took this eat-all-you-can idea back to his homeland and introduced it in his restaurant. But then there’s a small problem – the average Japanese couldn’t quite pronounce “smörgåsbord”!
So, long story short – along came a smart Japanese guy who (after watching the 1958 movie “The Vikings”) somehow connected “Viking”=“Scandinavian”=“Smörgåsbord” and that’s how buffets in Japan came to be known as “Vikings”! So, when you are in Japan and are invited to a Viking, know that you can feast and plunder the all-you-can-eat meal!
Embracing this concept, Head Chef Tommy Kuan and his team have curated a spread that’s delightful and delectable. Do check out the Viking Buffet in Tatsu Japanese Cuisine in InterContinental Kuala Lumpur. It offers a wide array of authentic freshly cooked Japanese main-course dishes in addition to fresh and delectable sushi, sashimi and hand rolls at the counter. We love how the fresh hamachi, butterfish, tuna and salmon are sliced thickly for maximum enjoyment!
A good variety of Japanese appetisers, noodles, miso soup and desserts are served at the main station. Appetisers include Chuka Wakame, Kiriboshi Daikon, Kani Mayo Sarada and much more.
Highlights and must-try items are Tempura Moriawase, Unagi Kabayaki, Angus Beef Teppanyaki and Salmon Teriyaki.
Do keep some stomach space for Tatsu’s array of desserts included in the Viking meal.
Here’s the good news:

Considering the fresh and premium quality of ingredients served in this buffet, the price is value-for-money. The main dishes are only cooked upon order and served piping hot. Handrolls and maki rolls come to the table clad in crispy seaweed sheets and we practically had to blow at the chawan mushi to cool it down a bit before eating!
