I love Korean food. And I usually satisfy the hansik cravings in restaurants where I can have everything and anything between bulgogi and bossam! That’s how most of the Korean restaurants operate here in Malaysia – they serve a whole wide range of Korean dishes under one roof. In Korea, most restaurants serve just their particular speciality. When it comes to street food, well, you find them all over the place, from street to station. Train and subway stations are popular places for street … [Read more...]
DONGMUN MARKET in JEJU, South Korea
Whenever I travel to any city, I make it a point to visit at least one local market there. I love markets – this is where one gets to feel and absorb the local vibes and there’s always an invigorating energy wherever locals (and visitors) interact. Want to see how the locals live and behave – go to their local markets! When I was in Jeju, I just had to go visit the Dongmun Market as it’s one of the oldest markets on the island. Built way back in 1945, it moved to its present site after a … [Read more...]

HAECHI BBQ Restaurant, Setia Alam
Located in one of Setia Alam’s busiest thoroughfares, right in the commercial centre, is Haechi BBQ Restaurant. Opened just months ago, it’s the second outlet for the Lees and partners. The 1st outlet, in Kota Kemuning (read my review here) is well known among the residents in the township and I’m so happy for the Lees to be able to ride on that success and spread their brand of Korean food to Setia Alam. The simplistic decor of the restaurant is refreshing. Hand-drawn art decorates the … [Read more...]

Kafe Go To School – eating Korean the fun way in Solaris Mont Kiara!
What a quaint name! That’s the first thought which crossed my mind when I came across this name for a Korean restaurant in Solaris recently. It’s meant to capture the ambience of an old classroom back in the good old days. The colourful wooden tables and chairs are reminiscent of my primary school although we never had such vibrant colors for our school desks - they were all brown and scratched, I remember. There are special menus written on boards hung on the wall and customers … [Read more...]
MIDO Korean BBQ Restaurant, SS2 Petaling Jaya
Don’t be intimidated by the double-barrel ancient-looking thick wooden door which guards the entrance to Mido - latest Korean restaurant that’s opened in SS2 Petaling Jaya. The exposed brick walls on both sides of the door reinforce the traditional ancient slant of Mido’s facade, as designed by one of its owners, Joseph Lee. Push open the wooden doors - it’s like stepping into a traditional Korean house with warm brown tones everywhere. Bamboo blinds, Korean masks and other knick-knacks … [Read more...]

Ippudo @ Bangsar Shopping Centre: it’s not all about ramen
Mention the name “Ippudo” to any Japanese food lover and immediately the response is likely to be “oh, famous for ramen!” Well, that’s true, of course, as the founder of Ippudo, the charismatic Shigemi Kawahara is known as the “Ramen King” in Japan. When Kawahara-san started Ippudo way back in 1985, he created ramen which personified his philosophy and vision. His innovative “Tao” or way with ramen took on many revolutions and improvements. From a 300 year-old invention, Kawahara-san’s … [Read more...]
