I like the concept of “Bring Me Food” that’s being introduced at Tosca in DoubleTree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur. I mean, who wouldn’t like that, right? Bringing someone food must surely be one of the best things to do, especially to food lovers! It’s kinda like the Japanese Omakase concept. Basically that means “I’ll leave it up to you” and in this case, it means leaving it to the chef to cook whatever he fancies for that meal. To some, it may be a bit risky for who knows what the chef could be up … [Read more...]

Hairy delights at Di Wei Chinese Cuisine Restaurant, Empire Subang
Every year from September to October or early November, the Shanghainese Hairy Crabs make an appearance in many Chinese restaurants. Known also as “mitten crabs” (due to the furry growth on their legs and pincers), these hairy crustaceans are prized for their thick creamy roe and delicate flesh. The most prized catches are those that come from Lake Yangcheng and Lake Tai in Suzhou. It takes 2 years before the crabs are fully grown and ready for the table. An authentic hairy crab should have a … [Read more...]

Extra Super Tanker unveils some superb new dishes!
I have often wondered about the inspiration behind this name “Extra Super Tanker” for a Chinese restaurant? I mean, the place doesn’t really look like a tanker and possibly the description “extra super” refers to the food served here? Well, if that’s the case, then I agree wholeheartedly! Ahhh… but coming back to the “tanker” part, I was told the amusing anecdote behind this. Apparently it was meant to be “tankard” as the previous owner was a beer lover but somehow the spelling went a bit off in … [Read more...]

A Taste of Taiwan at Zuan Yuan, One World Hotel
At the heart of Taiwanese food is simplicity and use of basic rustic ingredients. Simple cooking methods also prevail, where food is usually cooked using just one method (eg steaming, frying, boiling etc) and then served. This is quite unlike other Chinese cuisines, like the Shanghainese or Cantonese dishes whereby usually a combination and permutation of various cooking methods are used to prepare a single dish. Perhaps it is this simplicity of ingredients and methods which has endeared … [Read more...]
