HAPPY DEEPAVALI! I know I'm a bit late in posting this Deepavali greeting but then I guess many of us are still in the Deepavali mood so maybe this is not too late after all. You know how we Malaysians celebrate all kinds of festivals and most times these celebrations extend beyond the actual date and I'm sure Deepavali is no exception! A few weekends ago I participated in a Deepavali-themed class at Bayan Indah - those of you who read my blog regularly will know that Bayan Indah is one … [Read more...]

Norwegian Seafood Gala Dinner @ The Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur
The Norwegian Embassy hosts a Seafood Gala Dinner annually in conjunction with the Malaysian Norwegian Business Council (MNBC) Innovation Award. This award is given to an outstanding member of the council to acknowledge its excellent performance. I was privileged enough to be invited to this gala dinner recently, which was held at the Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur. The MNBC was established in 1990 with the objective of stimulating business and trade between Norway and Malaysia and today it … [Read more...]
MIGF Menu at Mandarin Grill, Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur
New faces and new creations! - that certainly holds true for Mandarin Grill at the Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur. The new face there refers to their recently-appointed Chef de Cuisine ... Chef Reto Weber. Don't be misled by his young (well, he is young) and boyish looks ... someone even added "geeky and scrawny" to his description, Chef Reto comes with a rather distinguished culinary resume. He started his culinary career at the tender age of 16 when he decided to leave his Swiss Alps home … [Read more...]

Since the launch of the MIGF late last month, for the entire month of October, 28 participating restaurants are featuring special festival menus. I had a chance to check out the special MIGF menu at Lai Po Heen, Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur recently. Helmed by Chef Ricky Thein, who is … [Read more...]
Somtam @ Little Siam Corner, Summit USJ, Subang Jaya
For the past few weeks, I've been having a plate of Somtam every Sunday afternoon. Somtam is that delightful Thai salad made from shreds of young papayas, carrots, long beans tossed together with a very appetizing dressing made from fish sauce, lime juice, chillies and sugar. For some crunchies, toasted peanuts and fried anchovies or dried shrimps or dried cuttlefish are sprinkled on top. For a more authentic touch, if you eat this in Thailand, quite often there'll be some pickled baby crabs … [Read more...]

Currying Flavours @ Bayan Indah
Recently, I was at Bayan Indah - again - for another delightful culinary session. Read about my earlier escapades in Bayan Indah here, here and here! Truth be told, I have been to Bayan Indah more than those 3 blogged sessions - there were several that I did not blog about ... so you can call me an almost-veteran as far as Bayan Indah is concerned. Anyway, after a lapse of almost a year, I found myself at Bayan Indah a few weeks ago. This time, I had in tow a good friend - someone whom I've … [Read more...]
MIGF 2011 Gala Launch
For this entire month of October, some 28 of Malaysia's top restaurants are offering specially created Festival Menus at very special festival prices, in line with the Malaysia International Gourmet Festival - MIGF. The media launch of this event was held earlier last month where the theme was announced - "It's Raining Chefs". This year's deliberately light-hearted tagline is aimed at giving the festival universal appeal. "Malaysia is a relaxed and friendly food destination," says Dato' Steve … [Read more...]
Bijan – fine Malay cuisine in the heart of Kuala Lumpur
Bijan - a name synonymous with refined Malay dining in Kuala Lumpur, has been established since 2003. They can be considered as the pioneer in this cuisine segment. Not to be mistaken for "fine dining", at Bijan, their service philosophy lies in marrying traditional recipes with modern ingredients to create a total dining experience for the modern Malaysian. Newly renovated and expanded, Bijan now boasts a more spacious dining area, a whole new bar and reception area. A warm rustic theme runs … [Read more...]
