For the past few weeks, I’ve been having a plate of Somtam every Sunday afternoon. Somtam is that delightful Thai salad made from shreds of young papayas, carrots, long beans tossed together with a very appetizing dressing made from fish sauce, lime juice, chillies and sugar. For some crunchies, toasted peanuts and fried anchovies or dried shrimps or dried cuttlefish are sprinkled on top. For a more authentic touch, if you eat this in Thailand, quite often there’ll be some pickled baby crabs thrown in as well.
A plate of Somtam here costs only RM5.00!
Anyway, back to my story…. it was LL who introduced me to this Little Siam Corner, tucked on the 2nd Floor of Summit Mall in USJ. I remember, several years ago, they started as a little stall offering their Thai favourites during a “Visit Thailand” fair or some Thai tourism promotion fair. I guess business must have flourished since then and they stayed on to set up this Little Siam Corner… which is not “little” really. There are at least 15 tables at this place.
LL’s favourite here is their Fried Rice – in all its variations. There’s the Pattaya-style, the belacan-style, pineapple-style, seafood-style, tomyum-style … and talking about tomyum, they cook this ready in huge pots and you can either order this as a soup on its own or have some noodles dunked in it.
Their Mango with Glutinuous Rice is very popular and I can understand why. They use authentic Thai long-grain fragrant rice and when steamed with coconut milk, this yields the most aromatic rice ever, with a delicious chewy bite. Eat each spoonful of rice with some fresh sweet mangoes and you’re in Siam heaven.
This place is well-patronized as prices of dishes here are very affordable, with most one-meal dishes costing between RM6.00 – RM8.00. Food here is simple and unpretentious – don’t expect any frills, as in food presentation/plating. They also have other Thai dishes you can order to go with white rice but I have yet to try any of those because every time I come here, it’s the Somtam for me… and occasionally a bowl of their tomyum soup!

I think they were part of a troupe who used to go from neighbourhood mall to neighbourhood mall to set up for a week or two. The setup looks the same 🙂 Will definitely visit them when I am in the nieghbourhood!
I think you are right – i guess after the travelling around, they decided to set up a permanent place!
Wow the somtam sounds good but I absolutely hate Summit.. so dingy and dodgy
I think the place has improved lots… the car park is much much better now!
