I have dined at Toh Yuen Chinese Restaurant quite a long time ago. I remember it as a spacious restaurant located in the Klang Executive Club in Bandar Baru Klang, Bukit Rajah. They are pretty well known for their Chinese banquets as it can accommodate 500 guests at any one time. There are also 6 private VIP rooms equipped with computerised karaoke system.
When they sent me a box of their mooncakes for review, their long rectangular red, yellow and black box reminded me of the restaurant’s traditional set up. There were 2 snowskin and 2 traditional baked moon cakes in the box.
The baked mooncakes were Lotus Paste and Mixed Nuts and of these two, I liked the assorted nuts in a not-too-sweet paste. The nuts were fresh and crunchy – an important factor as nothing is more repulsive than stale chewy nuts. The winter melon in the paste was not overly sweet and I found myself happily chewing on the mooncake.
The baked Lotus Paste mooncake was well executed. The moist paste was dotted with kuaci which gave it a nice crunch.
Of the two snowskin mooncakes, Lotus Paste with Single Yolk and Red Bean Paste, I prefer the plainer red bean paste. It’s not overly sweet and I enjoy the nice aroma of red beans in its unadulterated paste speckled with crunchy kuaci.
The mooncakes from Toh Yuen are sold at RM10.50 per piece and up to RM66 for a box of 4.
