Months and months before this, Master Chef Yiu Wing Keung together with his culinary team sat down with their creative chef hats to brainstorm and create the new flavours of mooncakes for the year. Every year Tai Thong Restaurants pride themselves with several new flavours to entice their customers. While maintaining the evergreen traditional ones, the new flavours for the year are always anticipated with great interest.
This year Tai Thong Restaurants are introducing 4 new flavours which would appeal to many of us as the theme is based on fruits and nuts. Dried fruits, nuts and seeds lend their flavours and aromas to the mooncakes which are made with less sugar too. The 4 new fruity flavours comprise 2 baked and 2 snow skin versions:
Orange Lotus with Palm Sugar & Assorted Seeds
Rich caramel notes from pure coconut palm sugar complement the zesty citrus flavour of orange-infused lotus paste.
Blueberry Lotus with Dried Fruits & Assorted Seeds
Sweet, ripe “superfruit” blueberries bring a distinctive colour to this mooncake, paired with a crunchy mix of fruits and seeds. The violet hues are really pretty.
Snow Skin Mango Kiwi with Assorted Dried Fruits
Refreshing with a tropical twist, sweet mangoes are paired with tart kiwi lotus paste and assorted dried fruits for added texture.
Snow Skin Pineapple Lotus with Jackfruit Mochi
Deliciously tangy and sweet, pineapple lotus paste surround a surprise chewy mochi centre filled with creamy jackfruit.
The above new mooncakes are priced at RM18.80 nett each for West Malaysia and RM19.30 nett each for East Malaysia. All Tai Thong mooncakes are certified “Halal” by JAKIM.
While the new mooncakes are set to wow its customers, Tai Thong Restaurants maintain its ever-popular Imperial Musang King Royale which are exclusively sold in their outlets only. Made of pure unadulterated Musang King durians, these babies have their own legion of fans. Tai Thong Restaurants have their own dedicated orchard to produce this particular premium strain of durians specifically for the mooncakes encased in a lovely shade of yellow snow skin.
The Imperial Musang King Royale are sold at RM78 for 2 pieces and they come in a special cooling bag as these premium mooncakes taste best when chilled.
Besides the above, Tai Thong has 9 flavours for their baked mooncake range and 5 other snow skin variety. Traditionalists can still enjoy the lotus paste (with/without egg yolks), red bean paste, white lotus paste, yam paste and black sesame paste in their mooncakes. Prices range from RM12.80 to RM19.80 per piece (West Malaysia) and RM13.30 to RM20.30 (East Malaysia).

In the recent press conference for the media to preview their mooncakes, the Tai Thong Group went to great lengths to ensure their guests had an enjoyable evening. Members of the media had great fun making their own snow skin mooncakes guided by the chefs against a backdrop of Chinese tunes by musicians playing classical instruments and a stilt-walker making his rounds. I particularly enjoyed the drummers performance which officiated the event. Ahh yes, a Tai Thong press conference is always filled with a good degree of pomp.
We later sat down to a sumptuous dinner where Tai Thong showcased some of their special a la carte dishes created just for the Mid Autumn Festival. Going with the same theme, the dishes featured similar fruits and nuts used in the 2015 new mooncakes.
Double-boiled Chicken Soup with conpoy, papaya and snow fungus. Loved the umami flavours of this tasty soup!
Crispy Soft Shell Crabs with Mango & Kiwi Sauce
Pan-seared Scallops with Blueberries & Apricots
Stuffed Prawns with Palm Sugar & Fresh Orange and
Fried Prawns with Pineapples & Jackfruit Sauce
Spicy Pineapple Fried Rice with Vegetarian Floss
Peony Puff Pastry with Pineapple & Jackfruits and Blueberries & Cranberries Steamed Sponge Cake. That steamed sponge cake (“malaikoh”) was really good with the layer of tangy fruity paste in between.
