The Shanghai Restaurant in JW Marriott Kuala Lumpur is one of the rare restaurants in town which serves this native cuisine. It obviously has its legion of fans as it has been around for a long time. Recently it underwent a makeover and the result is astounding. From a typical traditional set-up since many years ago, it has now been transformed into a more contemporary and elegant restaurant with some edgy touches. Its foyer now houses a modern simplistic bar and classy golden-hued sofa and seats – perfect for chilling out in style.
Executive Chinese Chef Wong Wing Yuek, a true-blue native Shanghainese, together with his culinary team has worked out several special menus for the coming Chinese New Year. Their delicately-plated Yee Sang comes with delicacies such as abalone, jellyfish, salmon, lobster and geoduck. There are 2 special set menus curated for the lunar celebrations, starting from RM288.80 per person and be prepared to indulge in festive dishes like Braised Superior Fish Maw Soup with Sea Cucumber, Bird’s Nest, Steamed Cod with Chinese Ham, Bamboo Fish Shanghainese-style and Braised Iberico Pork.
Besides the set menus, delectable Shanghainese dishes are also available on the a la carte menu. So if you feel like savouring their signature Cold & Hot Appetizers and Dim Sum, go right ahead and order away! Check out Chef Wong’s Shanghainese version of Steamed Chicken with Chinese Herbs, Shanghainese Family Hot Pot and Braised Wild Mediterranean Prawns, just to tantalize your taste buds.
At a recent preview, we had the opportunity to relish some of Chef Wong’s signature dishes. It started with their very delightful “Prosperity Yee Sang with Salmon & Fresh Fruits” where the thin slivers of dragonfruit, starfruit, kiwifruit and crispy pear were arranged artistically in a floral design. I felt the yee sang was really too pretty to toss up!
Then we were feted to an array of 8 Shanghainese Cold & Hot Dishes – all signature items on the menu…
Sliced Pig’s Ears with Sesame Oil
Flat Glass Noodles with Peanut Sauce
Duck with Chef’s Special Sauce
Chilled Drunken Chicken in Chinese Rice Wine

Braised Spanish Pork with Pine Nuts & Vegetables – there’s a layer of chopped shrimps and pine nuts beneath the pork belly to add texture and character to this comforting dish!
