I think steamboat is a very Chinese thing. Well, at least here in the Klang Valley, it is. Most of the flourishing steamboat restaurants are filled to capacity, with mainly Chinese diners. We Chinese seem to love cooking our food in boiling broth and then slurping up the soup later. I love steamboat for that very reason, the soup-slurping, I mean. Being a Cantonese, I do love my soups, a love that’s inculcated since childhood. That’s one of the very first things my mother taught me – how to boil … [Read more...]

Boathouse @ TTDI Kuala Lumpur – food to rock your tummy & heart!
The first time I met Chef Yenni Law was at the media launch of her book “Meatology” (read my write-up here). Of course Yenni was very busy during that event and we didn't have much time to chat. I sampled some of her dishes (from her cookbook) during the event and from what I tasted, I was pretty excited with Yenni’s creativity. I couldn’t wait to check out more dishes from her restaurant, Boathouse. Now, if you are a resident of Taman Tun Dr Ismail or its vicinity, you would probably have … [Read more...]
Business Lunch Sets at Senja @ The Saujana Hotel
If you are in the vicinity of The Saujana Hotel , Klang, Shah Alam or even Petaling Jaya, and need a nice place for a business lunch, look no further. Go to Senja, which is nestled in lush green surroundings at The Saujana Hotel. It’s a beautiful place, believe me. The standalone restaurant is lovely with its warm brown parquet flooring enveloping white tables and chairs. Diaphanous sheer drapes flutter gently, separating sections of the restaurant for that bit of privacy. … [Read more...]
Outback Steakhouse, Nu Sentral, Kuala Lumpur
“Big, Bold and Fresh” – now that’s the incredible tagline of Outback Steakhouse. This was clearly reinforced in the recent opening of the 2nd outlet of Outback Steakhouse in NU Sentral. Its flagship store in Bukit Bintang Park has been around since 2001 dishing out delicious food holding fast to the “Big, Bold and Fresh” philosophy. “Big” refers to the generous portions and variety of food served in Outback. I was more than overwhelmed by their portions and most of their starters, mains … [Read more...]
Latest Recipe @ Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur – revamped & refreshed!
If I have to choose a particular hotel restaurant for a good buffet meal, Latest Recipe in Le Meridien Kuala Lumpur invariably comes to my mind. Quality of food has always been consistent there and the selection is also commendable. I’ve never hesitated in recommending this place whenever someone asks me to name a nice place for a buffet. If I had liked it before its renovation, I now like it even more. After a 3-month renovation exercise, Latest Recipe has reopened with a refreshed … [Read more...]
IPPUDO Bar at Bangsar Shopping Centre – indulge in Japanese whiskeys, sake & beers
Here in the Klang Valley, Ippudo has always been associated with ramen and accompanying Japanese dishes (read my earlier review here). Now there’s another experience to associate with that name, with the opening of IPPUDO Bar not too long ago at the Bangsar Shopping Centre. Located right next to Ippudo Ramen, IPPUDO Bar’s outdoor area section is a dedicated bar with high tables, wine chiller and bar shelves to display authentic Japanese alcohol. It is a natural progression, if … [Read more...]
Lam’s Kitchen – a gem in Bukit Jelutong
The folks in Bukit Jelutong are a lucky lot. With Lam’s Kitchen housed in the neighbourhood mall dishing out delectable food, they certainly have it good, as far as family and casual dining is concerned. Located just next to Jaya Grocer’s, the simple set-up does not undermine the delicious food coming out from the kitchen. Lam's Kitchen is a simple, no-frills outfit Their Wantan Noodles blew me away. I’m always on the lookout for good wantan noodles and coming from Ipoh, I’m very particular … [Read more...]
Ecole P – a stroll down nostalgia lane
Stepping into Ecole P is like taking a nostalgic journey down memory lane. Yes, specifically the lane to your childhood school. It’s like stepping back into my primary school classroom. After all, “ecole” is school in French, so it’s no wonder the owners drew their inspiration from there. The tables, complete with scratchings, are fashioned from old school desks, menus are written on exercise books and cutlery is kept in pencil cases stuffed inside school bags. Charming vintage vibes … [Read more...]
Maria’s Steak Cafe, Damansara Perdana
“Nothing fancy, simply good food” - that’s the promise from Maria’s and I was there recently to check this out. The steak cafe in Metropolitan Square, Damansara Perdana is cosy and comfortable. There’s a homely feel to the place, perhaps due to the checkered table cloths covering the dark wood tables. Service is friendly, efficient and pleasant. My dinner starts with their Spicy Mussels (RM22) - 6 plump mussels smothered with a spicy tomato-based sauce. The thick sauce is very … [Read more...]
