My knowledge on Scandinavian cuisine, particularly Finnish cuisine, is pretty much limited to what I have watched occasionally on television. What came to mind immediately is “New Scandinavian Cooking” which I have caught on Asian Food Channel (AFC) just recently. So, when I was invited for a media event featuring none other than the American-Finnish cooking sensation, Sara La Fountain, naturally I seized the opportunity. Jointly presented by American Express and AFC, this was the 4th … [Read more...]

KHAO by Rama V @ Setia City Mall
The smell of fresh paint still lingers in the air as you walk into Setia City Mall. Yes, it’s new. The mall opened barely a fortnight ago, so everything is spanking new there. Walk in from the South Entrance main door and you will see the sparkling new KHAO by Rama V on your left. KHAO by Rama V is a new concept restaurant from none other than the award-winning Rama V Fine Thai Cuisine. Read about my reviews of Rama V here and here. The good folks of Rama V are now presenting a new … [Read more...]
S.wine @ Publika
We were at S.wine in Publika some weeks back, seeing that Publika seems to be the “in” place to chill-out and dine these days. What with the The BIG B.I.G Weekend happening there these 2 days, I’m sure many foodies are heading there. So, let’s see what S.wine has to offer. Housed in a corner inside Ben’s Independent Grocer, you will be greeted by one hunk of a black swine at the doorway and then a row of pink piggies line the top of a counter inside, with a solitary black one … [Read more...]
Penang One – Penang Delights under One Roof!
One Sunday morning, feeling in the mood for some Penang delicacies, we took a drive to Puchong where we heard there’s this café that’s serving a whole lot of Penang goodies. If you have to go to Puchong, ideally do it on a Sunday – that’s when traffic is a breeze and parking is not a problem. We located Penang One easily – it’s in Bandar Puteri and across the road from Giant hypermarket. As we were pretty early, there were not that many customers there yet. The walls are decorated with … [Read more...]
Di Wei @ Empire Hotel Subang
Tucked away on Level 1 of Empire Hotel Subang is Di Wei Chinese Restaurant (next to Popular Bookstore). The classy casual facade leads the way into an incredibly spacious restaurant beyond. Inspired by the hotel's sleek and chic concept (more photos of the hotel below), Di Wei Chinese Restaurant is tastefully decorated with well-crafted Oriental carvings on the walls, floor-to-ceiling windows that let in natural lighting. The embedded wooden floor panels bring out a sense of warmth and charm. … [Read more...]
Hennessy V.S.O.P New Bottle Launch
Hennessy V.S.O.P - do you know what the V.S.O.P stands for? No? Neither did I, before I attended the Hennessy V.S.O.P New Bottle Launch party a few nights ago. Well, here's the answer: Yes, it all started in 1817. Legends are shaped over time. The legend of Hennessy V.S.O.P. began on 7 October 1817, when the future King George IV of England asked the great French cognac House to supply him with a special cognac described in the records with the words “Very Superior Old Pale”. … [Read more...]
Menya Musashi is open at 1-Utama!
I confess: I am not a great fan of ramen, generally. I find that eating ramen (in many Japanese restaurants here) is akin to eating instant noodles. That’s why on any other day you won’t ever catch me in a ramen shop. Not much anyway. Not until I heard that Menya Musashi is opening right here in Petaling Jaya, right next to where I work. Back in February this year, the good people from Menya Musashi Japan actually did a market test in Isetan KLCC by having a temporary kiosk in the food court. … [Read more...]
A Touch of Nyonya Influence by Chef Debbie Teoh @ Chatz Brasserie
It's exactly a year ago that I wrote about Chef Debbie Teoh and her delightful Nyonya specialities. It was also at the same venue - Chatz Brasserie at Parkroyal Kuala Lumpur. Read about my post one year ago here. The authentic Nyonya fare served up by Chef Debbie must have been such a hit that Parkroyal Kuala Lumpur has decided to bring her back again this year and timely too - for the upcoming Mother's Day celebrations! Nasi Ulam I had a sense of deja vu as I walked into Chatz … [Read more...]

Home-baked Marble Cake: it’s all about swirling!
I've been baking this Marble Cake several times the past couple of weeks to experiment with the swirling. Using a basic Butter Cake recipe (which is so easily Googleable), I take out one-third of the batter and mix it with a paste made from chocolate and instant coffee powders. It's important to add in that half-teaspoon of instant coffee powder as it really enhances the flavour, and darkens the colour too. In the first attempt, I used a skewer to swirl the batter. It wasn't effective at … [Read more...]
